Risk with American Dollar$$?? RAY DALIO: Everyone should have 5-10% in gold

Business Insider CEO Henry Blodget speaks with Ray Dalio, the founder of Bridgewater Associates, the world’s biggest hedge fund. Dalio discusses his assertion that most portfolios should have gold allocated at 5-10%, if for no other reason than it’s a great diversifying asset. Following is a transcript of the video.

Henry Blodget: You recommend that most portfolios should contain some gold.

Ray Dalio: Yeah, of course.

Blodget: Why? A lot of people think it's not of course. In fact, it doesn't make sense.

Dalio: Well, first of all, the best way to structure a portfolio is to have the right kind of balance in your portfolio, and some amount of gold. Gold serves a purpose. It is first of all, a diversifier against other assets. You know, we have this risk on, risk off thing. We also have a monetary system. The Bretton Woods monetary system began after World War II, and it had the dollar as the world's reserve currency. There's a risk there. There's a lot of dollar denominated debt and so on. If somebody felt they didn't want to hold that, and so you could have exposures to that.

The Knowledge Illusion: A Human Mind Flaw

This flaw in the human mind explains why the world is full of overconfident, bumbling know-it-alls
By Jeremy Olshan
Published: Sept 21, 2017 3:37 p.m. ET
The ‘knowledge illusion’ is worse than a mere failure to know what we don’t know; it’s not realizing how we know what we do know
A reporter gets send to search engines in shame.
"By forcing me to own up to the limits of what I understand about the universe, they help me, for at least a few fleeting moments of humility, to overcome one of the human mind’s most persistent and destructive biases, what psychologists call “the illusion of explanatory depth.” . . .
America in 2017 is a stronghold of strongly held beliefs. Yet “public opinion is more extreme than people’s understanding justifies,” Sloman and Fernbach write, citing depressing studies that found many Americans with the firmest views on, say, the Affordable Care Act barely scratch the surface of understanding the law. In fact, those of us with the most inflated sense of our own knowledge and skills may perform the worst, a phenomenon that psychologists call the Dunning-Kruger effect . . .
We all tend to mistake our shallow puddles of understanding for vast oceans, cognitive scientists Steven Sloman and Philip Fernbach write in their new book ‘The Knowledge Illusion.’
It’s just no longer possible to know it all.
As Socrates, a guy fortunate to have born 2,500 years before the iPhone, put it,
“I neither know nor think that I know.”

The Zumwalt Class: IS THE U.S. NAVY GETTING READY TO DEVELOP A NEW 'BATTLESHIP'? || WARTHOG...

Creating what would amount to an American pocket battleship, operating alone on the high seas in the face of the enemy, is a risky proposition. Still, the concentration of firepower such a ship could bring to bear also makes it an attractive one, and the ship’s stealthy nature, extensive defensive-weapons capability, and America’s lead in military communications and networking all give it an edge in survivability. While it may mean a few more years in the shipyard, especially for the lead ship already commissioned into the fleet, what will emerge is a ship more suited for the growing task for sinking enemy ships. From the progress America’s potential adversaries are making in shipbuilding, that task isn’t going away anytime soon.

Ray Dalio > A Lifetime of Principles

Published on Sep 17, 2017

Ray Dalio says it took more than great returns to turn Bridgewater Associates into the world's largest hedge fund. It took principles -- prescriptive rules for life and business that Dalio established over four decades. The principles are what make Bridgewater unique, and unusual. Now Dalio has published them in a book, along with his life story. Bloomberg's Erik Schatzker sat down with Ray Dalio at Bridgewater's campus in Westport Connecticut to review those principles.

5 Finalists Announced To Fill Vacant Seat on Mesa City Council District 3

Announcement from the City of Mesa Newsroom
Mesa City Council selects finalists for open District 3 council seat
September 21, 2017 at 12:30 pm
The Mesa City Council selected five finalists for the open District 3 City Council seat during this morning's Study Session. The Council will interview the finalists and appoint someone to the seat during a special City Council meeting on Sept. 28. There were 31 eligible applications received for the position.
The five finalists are:
  • Pablo Felix,
  • Francisco Heredia,
  • Frank Mizner,
  • Theresa Ratti
  • Christian Stumpf
Applicants must have resided in District 3 for a period of no less than two (2) years in order to be eligible for the appointment.

In accordance with the Mesa City Charter, Council needs a decision and a final vote on the appointee no later than 30 days after the vacancy was created.
If no decision is made by Sept. 30, a special election will be called to elect a replacement.

The appointee will serve as the District 3 Councilmember until the election on Aug. 28, 2018. A runoff election, if required, will be held on Nov. 6, 2018.

Here's some information the contenders included in their council applications:
Pablo Felix: A Mesa resident of two decades and corporate sales consultant for a human resources company. He has volunteered in the community, including a stint as a former assistant Boy Scoutmaster. He's a native Spanish speaker, with a bachelor's in marketing from Arizona State University.
In his application, he wrote: "Because I love this community, I want to build upon the good that has already been done by those before me and serve my neighbors."
Francisco Heredia: A relative newcomer to District 3, Heredia has worked for civic engagement organizations Mi Familia Vota as a national field director and One Arizona as director. He moved to the district in 2015 and holds a master's degree in public administration from ASU.
Heredia worked in community relations at the Maricopa County Recorder's Office until Sept. 15. He resigned to pursue other projects and consulting.
Asked why he did not specify that he was leaving his job on the application, Heredia said there wasn't room. The application did not have a word limit, according to the city.
He wrote, "This is a time to heal and move forward with the work that needs to happen in both District 3 and the city."
Frank Mizner: A former planning director for Mesa who ran for council in 2004. He's board president of the Homeowners' Association at Dobson Ranch, a planned community in southwest Mesa. He has a master's degree in urban geography from the University of Arizona.
Christian Stumpf: A director of external affairs at the Nature Conservancy and former vice president of government relations at the American Lung Association of the Southwest. He was also a finance director at the Arizona Republican Party. He's two courses shy of a bachelor's degree in political science at ASU.
Stumpf wrote, "This is a great opportunity to have a voice for District 3 and Mesa at a time when big changes are happening."
Theresa Ratti: A Mesa Public Schools teacher who moved to Mesa with her family in 1974. She collected signatures with Save our Schools Arizona, which was created to halt the state's school voucher expansion. She has a doctorate in leadership and policy from ASU.
She wrote: "Participating in the Hispanic Leadership Institute-East Valley opened my eyes even more to the great need of our Latino community, a need I see on a daily basis teaching."
