A one-year "digital initiative" (a Facebook page) to overcome the communication gap between 28.1% of Mesa's Spanish-speaking residents has so far attracted only about 400 people who either follow the page or like it. Let's crunch the numbers and ask if that so-called outreach initiative is successful or not when the targeted population is about 130,000 out of Mesa's 475,00 residents ------ that's only about 0.0001%
March 11, 2019 at 5:35 pm The City of Mesa has won the Diversity Award for cities of 200,000 to 500,000 residents from the National League of Cities (NLC) Congressional Cities Congress in Washington D.C.
The award is for the City’s en Español Facebook page. The Diversity Awards honor excellence in multicultural initiatives in cities and towns and are presented each year at the NLC's Diversity Breakfast.
"I am very excited and proud for the City of Mesa to receive this national award," City Manager Chris Brady said.
"This was an employee driven initiative and we had a number of City employees who passionately worked together to make this happen."
Formally launched in April 2018, Mesa en Espanol is a digital outreach initiative that overcomes the communication gap between the City of Mesa and its Spanish speaking residents. The goals of the web/Facebook pages and Spanish email address are to connect with and assist residents, provide timely and important information and help Spanish speaking residents understand how to maneuver within local government. Mesa is the third largest city in Arizona with a Hispanic population of 28.1 percent. Mesa Public Schools, Arizona's largest schools district, has a majority-minority population of 42 percent Hispanic while Mesa Community College was recently declared a Hispanic Serving Institute due to having a student population that exceeds 25 percent.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said Tuesday it will rename websites, social media accounts and employee email addresses to get rid of “Mormon” and “LDS” as the faith continues a push to be known by the religion’s full name and not shorthand nicknames it previously embraced and promoted.
The changes mark the latest step to implement a shift ordered last year by church President Russell M. Nelson. Nelson, 94, has said the Lord impressed upon the importance of the full name and that removing the name from titles is “a major victory for Satan.”
The faith’s presidents are considered prophets who lead through revelations from God. Nelson ascended to the post in early 2018. The faith believes that the full church name was given by revelation from God to founder Joseph Smith in 1838.
The Utah-based faith of 16 million worldwide members said in the news release Tuesday that the website “LDS.org” will become “ChurchofJesusChrist.org.” The website designed for media and outsiders known as “MormonNewsroom.org” will become “Newsroom.ChurchofJesusChrist.org.” The website created for church missionaries will change from “Mormon.org” to “ComeUntoChrist.org.”
The Twitter account known before as “@MormonNewsroom” is now “@ChurchNewsroom.”

Until that time, Mormon.org will change to ComeuntoChrist.org. Social media: Several Church social media accounts will consolidate and give greater emphasis to the name of the Savior’s Church. These social media channels will publish content more focused on living and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.
A new Facebook group has been established to build community and better inform individuals about Church news and updates. This group is called “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—Inspiration and News.” This group is designed to be a place of community and connection for Latter-day Saints.
The Church’s Twitter account display name will continue to be called “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” with the username of @ChurchNewsroom and will be the primary source on social media for news from the Church.
Mobile Apps: Many of the Church’s mobile apps will be renamed to align with recent direction from Church leaders regarding the naming of Church products.LDS Music becomes “Sacred Music”
Email Domain: The email addresses of all Church employees, general Church leaders and many volunteers will begin using the @ChurchofJesusChrist.org domain instead of the current @ldschurch.org. Like other changes, this adjustment is intended to help keep the name of Jesus Christ prominent in all the Church does.
Much work remains, particularly as the Church make changes to products in numerous languages throughout the world. The First Presidency asks Latter-day Saints and others “to be patient and courteous as changes are made.” Read the First Presidency letter.
Since the first year of the Church’s founding, critics and others have sought to call the Church and its followers by other names — names Latter-day Saints used out of convenience at first but then came to embrace themselves. It’s hard work to undo nearly 189 years of history, culture and practice. But with God the impossible is possible. As President Nelson made clear in August 2018, “we have work before us to bring ourselves in harmony with [God’s] will.” Church leaders understand that this is a complex, multifaceted effort.
