Conspiracy monger Alex Jones shows up at conspiracy-fueled elections protest

Conservative extremists were present at the protests Wednesday and Thursday night, including members of the anti-government Three Percenters and QAnon. At one point Wednesday night, the crowd erupted into a chant of “Pizzagate” when a pizza arrived, referring the baseless conspiracy theory about a child sex ring operated out of a pizzeria in Washington D.C. 

As Jones walked away, many shouted that he was their “hero” and one young man yelled “thank you for waking me up Alex!”

"Right-wing conspiracy theorist and radio host Alex Jones showed up at the Maricopa County Elections Department Thursday night to rally with supporters of President Donald Trump to push baseless claims of voter fraud and assert that “globalists” were trying to “steal the election.”

Jones spoke to the crowd claiming that “globalists” and Bill Gates would be defeated along with George Soros echoing a conspiracy theory that has been boosted by the president and his supporters that has often been tied to anti-Semitic and anti-immigrant views. 

The radio host showed up unexpectedly, surprising many in the crowd who rushed toward him as he walked up to the Elections Department, where protests began Wednesday night. 

“They have awoken the sleeping giant,” Jones said, adding that if “the globalists” continued to try to steal the election they would incite “another 1776.”  .......................................................................................................

"Last year around election time, I sent a clip of Infowars lunatic Alex Jones to a friend. It was one of the ultimate Jones set pieces: his classic "gay bomb" rant, where the balloon-faced TV host turns baboon-ass red working himself up into a rage about Pentagon-designed hormonal weaponry that supposedly can "turn the frickin' frogs gay!"

What do you think tap water is?" he croaks, in the broadcast. "It's a gay bomb, baby!"

My friend wrote back. "Who the hell is that?" he said.
Why, I responded, that's Alex Jones, one of the most influential people in the United States.
My friend didn't believe it. "Come on, this is a gag or something," he said. His actual quote was that the Jones show was like a Nazi version of Tommy Boy, which to him was too funny of an idea to have been generated unironically.
This isn't an uncommon reaction.

Most sane people can't process Jones. Nor can they deal with the fact that he drew 83 million page views during election month last November, or that Infowars had 5.3 million unique visitors in May of last year . . "

"Portland, Maine has passed a ballot initiative banning the use of facial recognition by police and city agencies. The Bangor Daily News is reporting that voters have passed a ballot initiative bolstering a ban on facial recognition by city agencies.

The initiative follows a city council vote in August, which put a preliminary ban in place as an ordinance. Today’s vote replaces that ordinance with a stronger measure, which cannot be revoked for at least five years.

The ordinance was placed on the ballot earlier this year by the Southern Maine chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, as part of a raft of other progressive initiatives including a $15 minimum wage and new limits on rent increases.

The new measure also adds concrete penalties, entitling private citizens to a minimum of $1,000 in civil fees if they are surveilled in violation of the ordinance. Violations of the ordinance are also established as grounds for terminating or suspending a city employee. Private sector use of the technology is not affected.

Portland is just the latest city to swear off the technology, following previous bans by Boston, San Francisco, and Portland, Oregon. In June, congressional Democrats introduced a bill that would institute a similar ban at the federal level, barring all federal law enforcement agencies from employing facial recognition."
