Zelenskyy: If the US is not ready to accept us into NATO, give us nuclear weapons

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suggested that if the United States is unwilling to support Ukraine's NATO membership, it could provide an alternative security guarantee in the form of nuclear weapons.

Source: Zelenskyy in an interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan, as reported by European Pravda

Details: The president acknowledged that Ukraine's path to NATO membership could take "years or even decades", raising what he called a legitimate question: "What will protect us from this evil during all that time?"

Quote: "Which support package? Which missiles? Will they give us nuclear weapons? Then let them give us nuclear weapons."

Details: He speculated that the West might provide Ukraine with deterrent missiles but questioned whether such missiles could stop Russian nuclear weapons, calling it a rhetorical question.

Quote: "Let’s do the following: give us back nuclear arms; give us missile systems. Partners, help us finance a million army; move your contingents on the parts of our state where we want the stability of the situation, so that people have tranquility."

More details: Zelenskyy also pointed out that if Russia's invasion was motivated by fear of Ukraine's NATO membership, then if Ukraine remains outside the Alliance, "Putin must fully retreat from our territory".

Quote: "He [Putin] invaded because he was afraid we would become a NATO member. Okay, we are not NATO members. Go back of our land."

Background:

  • Earlier, Zelenskyy expressed confidence that US President Donald Trump could influence whether Ukraine joins NATO.
  • Meanwhile, Trump himself has said he "can understand" Russia's feelings, noting that the previous US administration declared support for Ukraine's membership in the Alliance.

DESPITE CRITICISM >> Flash News: US Trump administration proposes $1 billion arms sale to Israel including bombs and bulldozers

The Trump administration has asked congressional leaders to approve new transfers of roughly $1 billion worth of bombs and other military hardware to Israel at the same time the White House is working to preserve a fragile cease-fire in Gaza --
The proposed $1 billion arms sale is a clear indication of the U.S.'s continued support for Israel and its efforts to maintain its qualitative military edge in a volatile region. As tensions persist in the Middle East, particularly with the threat posed by Iran and various militant groups, this sale provides Israel with the necessary tools to defend itself and secure its strategic interests.
  • The U.S. and Israel’s military cooperation remains a cornerstone of their partnership, ensuring that Israel remains equipped to address the ever-evolving security challenges it faces.

According to information published by American Newspaper "The Wall Street Journal", on February 3, 2024, the Trump administration has informally notified U.S. Congress of a proposed new arms sale to Israel valued at approximately $1 billion.
  • The sale includes a variety of munitions and heavy equipment, specifically: 4,500 BLU-110 precision-guided bombs, 200 Mk 83 1,000-pound bombs, and Caterpillar D9 bulldozers, with the munitions valued at $700 million and the bulldozers at $300 million.
While the arms sale has been notified to Congress, it has not yet been finalized.

  • Congress has a 30-day period in which it can raise objections to the sale.
  • However, given the long-standing and strategic relationship between the U.S. and Israel, such objections are unlikely to delay the sale significantly.

Past arms sales between the two nations have generally faced little resistance, although some members of Congress may raise concerns about the humanitarian implications of providing advanced weaponry, particularly in the context of ongoing conflicts in the region.
> This proposed arms sale is part of broader strategic objectives shared by both nations, particularly in the context of growing regional tensions.
  • Israel faces an increasingly volatile security environment, particularly due to Iran’s growing influence in the Middle East.
  • The U.S. sees Israel as a key partner in countering Iran's destabilizing activities, which include supporting various militant groups across the region.
  • The weapons offered in this sale will provide Israel with additional resources to bolster its defense and maintain its military superiority, which is critical in an area where Israel faces threats from multiple fronts.

US readies new $1 billion arms sale to Israel despite criticism | | AW

In August, the US approved the sale of $20bn in fighter jets and other military equipment to Israel.

The US is by far the biggest supplier of arms to Israel, having helped it build one of the most technologically-sophisticated militaries in the world.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the US accounted for 69 percent of Israel’s imports of major conventional arms between 2019 and 2023.

The US faces criticism for providing military aid to Israel, as more than 47,500 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in the Gaza Strip since an attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, according to Gaza’s health authorities.
  • Nearly 1,200 people were killed in the cross-border attack led by the Palestinian group, according to Israeli figures.

Amid a ceasefire and hostage exchange deal in Gaza on January 19, Israel intensified violence in the occupied West Bank, where more than 900 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers since last October, according to local authorities.

  • Several human rights groups, former State Department officials and Democratic lawmakers have urged the US government to halt arms transfers to Israel, citing violations of US laws, including the Leahy Law, as well as international laws and human rights. Israel denies these allegations.

The Leahy Law, named after former Senator Patrick Leahy, requires the US to withhold military assistance from foreign military or law enforcement units if there is credible evidence of human rights violations.

US-made weapons have been documented in several Israeli strikes on Gaza that resulted in civilian casualties, although American authorities have declined to confirm the fact.

A State Department report in May said it is “reasonable to assess” that Israel used US-made weapons in ways that are inconsistent with international humanitarian law. The report stopped short of reaching a definitive conclusion, saying it does not have “complete information.”
