Jirard's talk, "Ordinary People do Extraordinary Things," traces the historical arc of social change made possible by everyday people and gives three suggestions for generating courage when speaking out on the issues of race, gender, and sexual identity. Stephanie Jirard is a former Navy Judge Advocate, trial lawyer at the US Department of Justice, and death-penalty defense lawyer for the state of Missouri. She now teaches criminal justice at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
