Several journalists receive awards as well as two newspapers

Before becoming director of the editorial pages, Boas was editor of the Republic’s Sunday Viewpoints section and editor of its Community editorial pages. He joined the Republic in 1999.
Journalists at the Arizona Republic were recognized Saturday with several awards at the Arizona Newspapers Association’s annual meeting and fall convention in Chandler.

Phil Boas, the director of the Arizona Republic editorial pages, was honored with the Order of the Silver Key Award recognizing his longtime career in journalism. He was presented with the award by the Valley of the Sun Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Boas graduated from Brigham Young University, and he was formerly a staff writer for the Los Angeles Daily News and a reporter and editor for the Tribune Newspapers in Mesa.
The Silver Key award recognizes journalists who have been in the profession for at least 25 years, a majority of which were in Arizona, and have conspicuously contributed to the journalism profession and have inspired fellow journalists.
The Arizona Republic also won several individual and newspaper awards in the Arizona Newspaper Association 2018 Better Newspapers Contest.
> The Republic was named Arizona Newspaper of the Year in the daily category.
Additionally, journalist Alden Woods won Story of the Year for Dailies for “The new housing crisis,” and Yvonne Wingett Sanchez and Rob O’Dell were honored as Journalist(s) of the Year for Dailies.
