A few decades ago, Greg Bongiorno drove into the City of Mesa with little to no money in his pockets. From 1979 until 2002, Greg owned and operated a handful of furniture stores in the valley. In the summer of 2002, Greg Bongiorno took over an old potato barn building in Higley, AZ and turned into his unique home furnishings dream.
"We were crazy enough to open a store in the middle of nowhere in a broken-down barn." says Mike Bongiorno (manager of the Scottsdale location and Greg's son).
That broken down barn helped lead the way for shoppers looking for one-of-a-kind pieces and unique furniture are sure to find the style that fits their home. As soon as they step foot inside the new 100,000 square foot store, shoppers will certainly find something unique to fall in love with.
"Some pieces are really old and vintage here.
Some are replicas, and then we have the industrial, modern, farmhouse and intentionally rustic items for those looking for something a little more unique."
"In 2002, my dad found an old abandoned building alongside some railroad tracks near Gilbert. That barn had, for years, been with packed potatoes, to be shipped and loaded onto the trains that pulled right up next to the building. My dad's idea was to bring in some 'cool, unique pieces that are affordable and people will love.'"
That idea has since grown over the last 17 years, allowing Potato Barn to evolve from a tiny old barn in Higley to three thriving stores here in the valley; Scottsdale, Chandler, and now Mesa.
Along with the local community, Mayor John Giles and Councilman Kevin Thompson will be in attendance for a special ribbon cutting ceremony early evening, Friday, May 10th at the new Mesa store.
"Potato Barn is a great addition to our community and a perfect fit for our fast growing residential areas in southeast Mesa," Mayor John Giles said. "Watching Arizona businesses grow locally and create jobs is very rewarding and I wish Potato Barn the best of success."
Councilman Thompson seconds that sentiment, "I am happy Potato Barn chose Mesa and the Ray Road Corridor in particular as their new home. They are a welcome addition to District 6 and the City of Mesa and I am looking forward to watching them continue their success while growing and expanding."
With cooperation from the City of Mesa, the planning and permitting process for the new 100,000 square foot store was a smooth process.
Construction started in April 2018 and was completed in March 2019.
Under the supervision of Sigma Contracting, over 400 tradesmen and women worked on the project. The new store is off of Ray Rd., east of Power and west of Hawes.
