UPDATE 2:
Virginia rally shows what happens when the US tries to pass gun control laws
By Emily Olson
Hal Miller woke up well before the sunrise, caught a 5:30am bus and rode 160 kilometres to stand outside of his state Capitol building in Richmond, Virginia, with a message for politicians: Don't take away Virginia's guns.
"We're not gun owners, but I think what's going on in Richmond today is a violation of this constitution. Guns are a civil right," he said. . .
But America is not talking about the folks like Hal today. Instead, they are focused on those seeking something else: visibility.

Hundreds carried military-assault style weapons through the streets, wearing combat attire and bearing symbols of revolt, sparking a national discussion about America's fringe political movements.
. . . White supremacists said they would descend on the Capitol — the site of the confederate army's headquarters during the US Civil War — on the US holiday that celebrates the work of Martin Luther King Jr.

. . . The gun rights supporters have already taken measures to ensure the gun laws won't be enforced if they do get passed.
More than 120 cities and counties in Virginia — the clear majority of the state — have declared themselves "second amendment sanctuary cities".
Across the US, more than 400 municipalities in 20 states have voted to do the same.
The term "sanctuary city" is co-opted from a democratic pro-immigrant movement. But in this case, it means those places will effectively ignore laws that limit gun laws.
Scott Jenkins, the Sheriff of Virginia's Culpepper County, plans to take the movement to a new height by deputising members of his community to allow them to legally carry guns.
"As a constitutional officer, I think the government is now choosing to clearly step far over the line," he said.
"It's my duty to the citizens who elected me to uphold the constitution."
He characterised support for his plans as "enormous" and "overwhelming" with thousands of his constituents volunteering to take the deputy's oath.
. . . When they see coverage of today's rally, one thing will loom larger than all the talk of the constitution and Virginia's beloved way of life: all of those guns.
