Norway Orders Delivery of 54 New LEOPARD 2 A7 Main Battle Tanks

The Norwegian military procurement authority NDMA has commissioned Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co. KG (KMW) with delivering 54 of the latest LEOPARD 2 main battle tanks (A7 NOR). The vehicles are scheduled for delivery from 2026 to 2028.

The necessary set of agreements for this was signed in Munich today. It also includes the option of having an additional 18 LEOPARD 2 A7 NOR vehicles delivered.

KMW CEO Ralf Ketzel commented the following statement on the conclusion of the contract: "This signing is a strong signal for European cooperation. It also underscores the tank's performance and future viability and its importance for joint defense efforts in Europe. KMW is grateful for the confidence. We look forward to the project and thus to long-term international industrial cooperation with Norwegian industry."

Inmarsat and SpaceX Announce Successful Launch of World's Most Advanced Satellite

Inmarsat’s latest I-6 F2 satellite successfully launched 17 February from SpaceX’s launch pad SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

Inmarsat, a world leader in global, mobile satellite communications, has announced the successful launch of its latest I-6 F2 spacecraft from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station aboard a reusable SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The launch saw I-6 F2 lift off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, reaching a top speed of almost 40,000km/h as it left Earth above central Africa. The satellite will now spend several months travelling to its geostationary orbit, 36,000km above the Equator, using its onboard electric propulsion system. It is scheduled to connect its first customers in 2024, following rigorous in-orbit technical testing.

I-6 F2 joins its ‘twin’, I-6 F1, which launched from Japan in late 2021. They are Inmarsat’s most sophisticated commercial communications satellites ever and will provide a revolutionary upgrade in Inmarsat’s global coverage services for at least the next 15 years. I-6 F1 is scheduled to connect its first customers later this year.

The new I-6 satellites add further capabilities to Inmarsat’s ORCHESTRA communications network; a unique, global, multi-dimensional, dynamic mesh network that will redefine connectivity at scale with the highest capacity for mobility worldwide. ORCHESTRA enables Inmarsat’s partners and customers to keep pace with their growing data demands and enables them to empower emerging technologies in the future, like autonomous vehicles or flying taxis.

For our U.S. Government customers, the I-6 F2 satellite enhances the ELERA and Global Xpress (GX) capabilities available for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions and other mission-critical applications by boosting coverage for even greater assurance, resilience and redundancy. Additionally, similar to I-6 F1, the F2 satellite includes two high-gain steerable Ka-band antennas that are processed or transponded and are interoperable with military satellite resources.

Lockheed Martin Awarded $1.1Bn Initial Contract to Provide Nation's 1st Sea-Based Hypersonic Strike Capability

  • Company will integrate weapon system onto U.S. Navy surface ships

Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) is partnering with the U.S. Navy to integrate hypersonic strike capability onto surface ships.

The U.S. Navy awarded Lockheed Martin a contract worth more than $2 billion, if all options are exercised, to integrate the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) weapon system onto ZUMWALT-class guided missile destroyers (DDGs). CPS is a hypersonic boost-glide weapon system that enables long range missile flight at speeds greater than Mach 5, with high survivability against enemy defenses.

Under this contract, prime contractor Lockheed Martin will provide launcher systems, weapon control, All Up Rounds (AURs), which are the integrated missile components, and platform integration support for this naval platform. A Shared Missile
CPS shares a common AUR with the Army LRHW and can be launched from multi zeple platforms including surface ships, submarines, and land-based mobile launchers.

Lockheed Martin is the prime systems integrator for the CPS and LRHW weapon systems. The company leads a team of industry, government, and academic partners to make critical progress in design and development to meet this urgent warfighter need in both land and sea domains.

A National Imperative FCC
Hypersonic vehicles or hypersonic missiles can travel faster than five times the speed of sound and are highly maneuverable. The combination of the CPS capability, and the stealth and mobility of the ZUMWALT-class destroyer, will provide the nation's first sea-based hypersonic strike capability.

Fielding CPS on the ZUMWALT-class destroyer will be a necessary and important step toward equipping the warfighter with a capability that embodies Lockheed Martin's 21st Century Security vision in support of our customers.

The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of the Netherlands of High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers and related equipment for an estimated cost of $670 million.  The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale today. 

The Government of the Netherlands has requested a possible purchase of twenty (20) M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers; thirty-nine (39) M30A2 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) Alternative Warhead (AW) Missile Pods with Insensitive Munitions Propulsion System (IMPS); thirty-eight (38) M31A2 GMLRS Unitary (GMLRS-U) High Explosive (HE) Missile Pods with IMPS; eighty (80) M57 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) Missile Pods; and seventeen (17) M1152A1 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs).  Also included are M28A2 Reduced Range Practice Rocket (RRPR) pods; radios with similar “SINCGARS” capability, including vehicular dual long-range radio systems w/GPS; single radio, long range vehicular system w/GPS; High Frequency/VHF radios; M1084A2 cargo trucks, Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTVs) Resupply Vehicles (RSVs); M1089A2 wrecker truck, FMTVs; M1095 5-ton trailer FMTVs; Simple Key Loaders (SKLs), AN/PYQ-10; Defense Advanced Global Positioning System Receivers (DAGRs); machine gun mounts; battle management systems, Vehicle Integration Kits, ruggedized laptops, and training equipment publications for HIMARS and munitions; camouflage screen and support systems; support equipment; communications equipment; spare and repair parts; test sets; training and training equipment; publications; systems integration support; technical data; Stockpile Reliability, Quality Assurance and Technical Assistance teams; U.S. Government and contractor technical, engineering, and logistics support services; and other related elements of logistical and program support.  The total estimated cost is $670 million. 

The proposed sale will improve the Netherlands’ military goals of updating capability while further enhancing interoperability with the United States and other allies.  The Netherlands intends to use these defense articles and services to modernize its armed forces and DC expand its capability to strengthen its homeland defense and deter regional threats.  The Netherlands will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces.

Implementation of this proposed sale will require U.S. Government or contractor representatives to travel to the Netherlands for program management reviews to support the program.  Travel is expected to occur approximately twice per year as needed to support equipment fielding and training. 

There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale. 

This notice of a potential sale is required by law.  The description and dollar value is for the highest estimated quantity and dollar value based on initial requirements.  Actual dollar value will be lower depending on final requirements, budget authority, and signed sales agreement(s), if and when concluded.

Terran Orbital, through its subsidiary Tyvak, will act as the prime contractor to design and manufacture the approximately 500 kg satellites, integrate the communication payload, and perform the final satellite assembly, integration, and test. We will also be responsible for developing portions of the ground segment. Mission operations for the on-orbit satellites will be conducted from a state-of-the-art satellite operations control center. Rivada expects to begin deploying its constellation as early as 2025, subject to compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, with the anticipated launch of four of our satellites.

Sidus Space Announces Multi-Million-Dollar Agreement with Netherlands for Laser Communication Satellite

Sidus Space, Inc. (NASDAQ:SIDU), a Space-as-a-Service company focused on commercial satellite design, manufacture, launch, and space-based data collection combined with space and defense mission critical hardware manufacturing has been awarded a multi-million dollar agreement with The Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) to deploy and test TNO’s laser communications technology aboard a Sidus’ LizzieSat™ satellite.  

As part of the $2.5 Million agreement, TNO will design and deliver HemiCAT, a high-efficiency miniature communications laser terminal, which Sidus will integrate into its hybrid 3D printed satellite, LizzieSat™. Sidus will manage all aspects of integration, deployment, and operations, including procuring a launch and operating HemiCAT in orbit.
