OK that is one statement made based on a supposition from the source whose point-of-view goes back to Allied victories in the 20th Century. (see below)

The U.S. and Europe Are Splitting Over Ukraine
The GOP’s populist wing would abandon Kyiv—and endanger the world’s most successful military alliance.
The American flag, but a European yellow star is peeling off of a white star |
Europe and the United States are on the verge of the most momentous conscious uncoupling in international relations in decades.
- Since 1949, NATO has been the one constant in world security. Initially an alliance among the United States, Canada, and 10 countries in Western Europe, NATO won the Cold War and has since expanded to include almost all of Europe.
- It has been the single most successful security grouping in modern global history.
- It also might collapse by 2025.
The immediate catalyst for the collapse would be the war in Ukraine.
- When the dominant faction within one of the two major American political parties can’t see the point in helping a democracy-minded country fight off Russian invaders, that suggests that the center of the political spectrum has shifted in ways that will render the U.S. a less reliable ally to Europe. The latter should prepare accordingly. . .

Excerpt:
NATO’s new command structure with additional headquarters aims to accomplish a better capability of deploying troops.
Do you think the potential deterrence towards Russia deriving from this step goes far enough?
It reflects the forward leaning adaptive nature of our great Alliance. I am impressed with both of the major command changes that have been proposed.
- And, I hope that Germany is the country that takes the lead on this.
- Particularly the rear area operations command.
- That is a logical choice from geography as well as capability and their organizational skills.
- It would do an awful lot to improve our ability to receive reinforcements as well as to move allied formations across Europe.
Michael E. O’Hanlon, a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, supports the hypothesis that the end of NATO’s eastward expansion and the implementation of a zone of neutral nations would reduce tensions with Russia.
How do you assess this proposal?
I believe nations get to make their own choices.
- If those nations want to join the EU and they meet the criteria then they should be able to join the EU.
- If they want to join the Alliance and they meet the criteria and the Alliance accepts it, then they should be able to do it.
- So, that is what we are all about, the self-determination of sovereign nations.
