Volodymyr Zelenskyy Meets with Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with the President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
The Head of State expressed gratitude for the EU’s leadership in rallying support around Ukraine to achieve a just and lasting peace.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy briefed his counterparts on the negotiations between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Istanbul and called for increased pressure on Russia should it refuse to agree to a full and unconditional ceasefire.
The President thanked for preparing the 17th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation and noted that Ukraine expects its adoption next week. Volodymyr Zelenskyy also added that the new sanctions package should target key sectors of the Russian economy: banks, oil, energy, metallurgy, and the shadow fleet.
Particular attention during the meeting was given to accelerating Ukraine’s EU accession. The Head of State informed his counterparts of the steps Ukraine has taken to unblock the negotiation process and the progress made along this path. The parties discussed the potential opening of negotiation clusters in the near future, as well as trade and economic relations between Ukraine and the European Union.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke about the meeting between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Istanbul. The President of Ukraine noted that the Ukrainian delegation at the negotiations was represented at a high level and had a mandate to discuss a ceasefire.
The Ukrainian leader expressed gratitude for the presence in Istanbul of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is also serving as National Security Advisor to the President of the United States, and Special Envoy of the President of the United States Keith Kellogg. Volodymyr Zelenskyy also thanked Türkiye for organizing the negotiations.
He emphasized that for more than two months, Russia has been leaving the U.S. proposal for an unconditional ceasefire unanswered, ignoring all possible calls, putting forward unrealistic conditions, and showing no willingness to end the war.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for increased pressure on Russia and the introduction of strong additional sanctions.
