BEA Announcement: BEA Releases Data and New Tool to Explore U.S. Exports and the Mix of Domestic and Foreign Content Used to Make Them   SUITLAND, Md. – BEA today released new and updated statistics on U.S. trade and global value chains and a new tool to access them. Known as trade in value added, the statistics show the mix of domestic and foreign content used to make goods and services exported from the United States. That information provides a more complete view of U.S. trade and global value chains. Today’s release includes new statistics for 2023 and updated statistics for 2017-2022, and marks the launch of the Trade in Value Added (TiVA) Table Builder tool in BEA’s Interactive Data Tables. The tool allows you to create custom tables to explore U.S. exports by industry, foreign destination, and sources of value in the chain of production. Global Value Chains

 

BEA is developing data to provide a more complete and nuanced view of U.S. trade to analyze the evolving structure of international trade. The data help analyze global value chains – increasingly complicated supply chains that link many countries together to produce a good or service.

For example, an airliner exported from the United States might combine U.S.-made parts with wings from Japan, passenger doors from France, landing gear from England, and other components built elsewhere. Likewise, U.S. industries provide goods and services used in other countries’ exports.

In the first milestone of this ongoing project, BEA released prototype data on trade in value added (TiVA) in December 2021. The data were expanded in 2023 to show additional breakdowns by industry and international region.

In June 2025, BEA launched a new TiVA Table Builder tool. The tool enables users to generate custom tables to explore export-oriented data, including the mix of domestic and foreign content used to produce goods and services exported by U.S. industries.

These data tables can be used to answer questions such as: What are the domestic and imported inputs used to create a U.S. industry’s exports? How do U.S. industries contribute to different global value chains?

Trade in Value Added (TiVA) Table Builder

National Trade in Value Added (TiVA) statistics from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) provide a mechanism for understanding the supply chains that underpin production of U.S. exports. Traditional trade statistics provide information on the amount of goods and services exported from the U.S. However, supply chains for those goods and services may cross borders to include activities of both domestic and foreign producers. Using BEA’s National TiVA statistics, data users can decompose these supply chains in order to understand the role of both domestic value added creation by domestic industries and imported content by source region.

The TiVA Table Builder tool can be used to create customized tables based on this dataset. The dataset is broken out along four dimensions as described below. To create a table, (1) select a dimension for the columns, (2) select a dimension for the rows, and (3) filter the final two dimensions as needed.

DIMENSIONS

1) Period: The period(s) for which the global value chain data are displayed.

2) Exporting Industry: The industry producing the good or service being exported.

3) Destination: The destination country or region to which the good or service is being exported.

4) Source of Value: The sources of value in the exported output, including domestic value added by producing industry and imported foreign content by source country or region.
