Richard Grenell has urged SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to provide free Starlink access across Iran

Richard Grenell, a former US ambassador to Germany and acting Director of National Intelligence, now serves as the Presidential Envoy for Special Missions under Donald Trump.
  • In this role, he has handled a wide range of diplomatic crises and international back-channel efforts.

Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX (the company behind Starlink), has confirmed that Starlink service has been activated in Iran, and that the "beams are on". This provides a potential alternative for internet access in the country, especially given the government's attempts to control information flow during the current crisis. However, accessing Starlink service requires a physical terminal. These terminals have reportedly been smuggled into Iran and are being sold on the black market at a high price, raising concerns about affordability and accessibility for the wider population.
When Israel launched a surprise "pre-emptive" attack against Iranian nuclear facilities last week, its intelligence agency Mossad reportedly activated sleeper cells who had smuggled drones into Iran to strike defensive infrastructure from within.
