Boeing Snags $18M Contract for UAE Longbow Apache Logistics Support - Pentagon

Boeing has won more nearly $18 million to provide the United Arab Emirates - one of the most repressive governments in the world. The Gulf dictatorship brutally cracks down on internal dissent and enables abusive conditions for its massive migrant labor force. It also plays a key role in the bloody war in Yemen, running a network of torture prisons in the “liberated” parts of the country - with engineering and logistics services for its AH-64D Longbow Apache attack helicopters, according to the Pentagon.

Hacked Emails Show UAE Building Close Relationship With D.C. Think Tanks That Push Its Agenda

The latest batch of hacked emails passed to The Intercept and other outlets by “GlobalLeaks” provide insight into how Otaiba manages to find — or buy — so many friends in D.C. think tanks. The documents offer a glimpse into how a small, oil-rich monarchy can obtain such an outsized influence on U.S. foreign policy,..and making large payments in return.

A $250,000 Invoice

One of the documents obtained by The Intercept was an invoice from the Center for New American Security, an influential national security think tank founded in 2007 by alumni from the Clinton administration. The invoice, dated July 12, 2016, billed the UAE embassy $250,000 for a paper on the legal regime governing the export of military-grade drones . . .
THINK TANKS are independent institutions, but they are often funded by weapons companies, Wall Street banks, and even foreign governments. CNAS is transparent about the fact they have received money from the UAE, and even list the country’s embassy on website as a donor. These institutions, including CNAS, often assert that their scholars are independent of their donors, and that their analysis reflects their personal beliefs, not the interest of powerful donors.

Surveillance Technology

The UAE government is a voracious consumer of surveillance technology, and has repeatedly bought up electronic spying tools from Western countries. . . In October, The Intercept reported that the UAE is recruiting a small army of Western hackers, who are helping to turn the Emirates into the world’s most sophisticated surveillance state.

 

 

 

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Boeing has won more nearly $18 million to provide the United Arab Emirates with engineering and logistics services for its AH-64D Longbow Apache attack helicopters, the US Department of Defense said in a press release.

"The Boeing Co., Mesa, Arizona, has been awarded a $17,960,940 modification to a Foreign Military Sales (United Arab Emirates) post-production support services and performance based logistics in support of the United Arab Emirates Land Forces Longbow Apache program for a total of 30 AH-64D Apache helicopters," the release said on Monday.

The Apache Longbow carries a 30mm single-barrel automatic cannon under the front portion of its fuselage which fires 625 high-explosive rounds a minute with a capacity of 1,200 rounds, according to published reports. It can carry as many as 16 Hell-Fire missiles for anti-armor missions.

$7 Cell Phone Sniffer

Tracking cellphone signals is much, much easier than you think.

This demo from Danish IT pro Keld Normal uses a $7 USB device to snoop in on cell signals, essentially sniffing out any cellphones connected to a tower nearby.

There’s a lot of Ubuntu and Python stuff going on under the hood, but it’s not as complicated as it looks. The USB doohickey is basically an antenna, picking up signals as they pass between phones and cell towers. This won’t get everything, but it’ll get more data the closer you are to a tower (here’s a good database), and the programs mentioned in the video are pretty good at sorting through the incoming data.

The end result is a database of every phone that connected in the area, along with the unique phone ID, called an IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) number.

To be clear, this isn’t quite as powerful as the Stingrays police use, but it also won’t get you in quite as much trouble. Those devices are actively sending out signals to nearby phones, masquerading as cell towers. That lets you get more data (along with more privacy concerns), but it also disrupts cell traffic and could get you in trouble with the FCC.
