Elon Musk's Neuralink gets FDA approval for study of brain --- News & More News

Let's start somewhere and some time - the last 5 minutes, but first this

Elon Musk gets nod for human trials of Neuralink brain chip and Twitter users are divided

Many are excited for the new tech and want to get recruited already while others are curious as to how it will work in future

The dystopian future is near – Elon Musk is one step closer to chipping our brains

The billionaire’s brain chip firm has received approval to conduct tests on humans.

No, this isn’t the opening sequence to a sci-fi blockbuster, Elon Musk has actually started work on brain-chipping humans. His brain chip firm has said it’s received approval from the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) to conduct its first test.

The billionaire’s company is called Neuralink and is said to want to help restore people’s vision and mobility by connecting the human brain to a computer. Apparently the plans to recruit participants are not immediate, but given the earlier bid by Neuralink to get FDA approval failed (according to a report in march by Reuters), this win may see the tests start soon.

Neuralink is aiming to use this microchipping to treat conditions like paralysis and blindness. Experts have spoken out and said that the company’s plans to test these implants will require way more extensive testing before this is properly carried out. Questions of ethics will come into play before they are open to public use. The chips have been previously tested in monkeys, and will work via Bluetooth to relay information from the motor system to the brain.

The company has spoken out to say that this will “represent an important first step that will one day allow our technology to help many people.” They added that further information will be out soon regarding recruitment to the clinical trials. Musk tweeted out his congratulations to the team.

On their website, their mission reads: “Create a generalised brain interface to restore autonomy to those with unmet medical needs today and unlock human potential tomorrow.” Co-founded by Musk in 2016, alongside Max Hodak, the team’s initial goal was to plant the chips into the brains of humans in 2020, which was then changed to 2022, and the speed at which they bring their plans to life has been overestimated numerous times.

Last December it was reported to Reuters that one of the setbacks was due to an ongoing investigation regarding animal welfare violations. The allegations were denied. A similar scientific venture received FDA approval for human tests by Swiss researchers. The results saw a paralysed man from the Netherlands able to walk with the chip tapping into his thoughts.

The field of implants is rather crowded, with companies like Synchronic, Medtronic, NeuroPace and Blackrock Neurotech all testing the chips, with some receiving FDA approval and already testing on humans. There have already been multiple investigations into the work of Neuralink, and their rush to get human testing passed before they are ready means all eyes will be on this next round of advances. It looks like there is a scientific race on to who will perfect the brain chip first.

People really don't want Elon Musk, a guy whose cars have caught fire and rockets have exploded, to put chips in their brains

Elon Musk's Neuralink says it's finally allowed to put brain implants in human beings, and the internet's not thrilled by the prospect.

When Neuralink tweeted on Thursday that federal authorities have approved its first human clinical study, the comments were filled with praises and well-wishes from verified accounts — people who've paid for a Twitter subscription.

But not everyone was enthusiastic about Neuralink's trial getting approved — in the kingdom of the checkmark-less, people are basically reacting with a collective "hell nah."

"The first dudes in line are still going to be apes," one user tweeted.

"Just say NOPE!" wrote another.

The backlash isn't too surprising, given how the announcement is about tech that literally puts a chip in your head, and Skynet still grips people on the internet with fear. Musk himself has hinted that he thinks nefarious AI might be a possibility.

The negative comments were largely directed toward Musk, not Neuralink. Neuralink says it's working on developing implants to assist paralyzed people, a feat recently accomplished by Swiss researchers.

Some people were not convinced that the technology would be used for positive ends in Musk's hands.

"If this is what you really think he's going to use it for, you're delusional," wrote one Twitter user.

"No trust or belief in him or anything he as anything to do with," tweeted another.

Lots of people are posting GIFs of exploding heads, likely referencing either past explosive hiccups from Musk's companies, like Teslas catching fire spontaneously, or reports that hundreds of animals tested by Neuralink have died.

To be fair, the billionaire's trade is in exceedingly ambitious ideas like living on Mars, self-driving cars, fixing the problem of traffic, and getting people on the internet to discuss things responsibly.

But with those ambitions have come very visible failures, such as SpaceX's mega-rocket bursting into flames in April (said by Musk to be an expected outcome) and The Boring Company's hyped Washington D.C. and Los Angeles projects stalling out in 2021.

And on Wednesday, tech issues on Musk's Twitter Spaces led to a disastrous start for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' 2024 campaign announcement, as hundreds of thousands of listeners overloaded the site.

"Elon already showed this week that he's the guy with the technical attention to detail to trust with brain implants," one Twitter user wrote sarcastically.

Meanwhile, some people are asking Musk to test the brain implants on himself.

They shouldn't have to wait long. Musk said in December that he'd do so once human trials are ready to go.

Whether the billionaire, CEO, and father of 10 actually puts the chip in his head remains to be seen.

American 'Special Military Operations' in The Ukraine: That Springtime "Counter-Offensive" + Plan for Ukraine's Long-term Future

US has been preparing Ukrainian counteroffensive ‘for months’ – Nuland

The “Maidan midwife” confirmed Washington’s role in the conflict at the Kiev Security Forum
US has been preparing Ukrainian counteroffensive ‘for months’ – Nuland

"U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland told an audience in Kiev on Thursday that Washington has been helping plan the Ukrainian ‘counteroffensive’ against Russia for almost half a year.

“Even as you plan for the counteroffensive, which we have been working on with you for some 4-5 months, we are already beginning our discussions with [the] Ukrainian government and with friends in Kiev – both on the civilian side and on the military side – about Ukraine’s long-term future,” Nuland told the Kiev Security Forum via video-link from the State Department.

She added that the attack will be “likely starting and moving concurrently” with events such as the NATO summit in Lithuania, scheduled for July 11.

  • According to Nuland, the US is also planning for Ukraine’s future military to deter Russia, so “wherever and however this ends – one year, six years, 16 years – we are not doing this again.”
  • She also painted a rosy picture of a future in which Ukraine would be the “engine of Europe’s revitalization” and “setting the democratic example… for the whole world.”
  • The forum was organized by the Open Ukraine Foundation, established by former Ukrainian PM Arseny Yatseniuk, who moderated the panel at which Nuland spoke.
  • Another panel was co-sponsored by the Atlantic Council, whose officials argued that “transatlantic unity and robust support can help Ukraine defeat Russia and renew European security.”

The government in Kiev had been heralding a major “counteroffensive” for months. President Vladimir Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials have argued that they didn’t have quite enough weapons, ammunition and equipment and needed the West to send more. As of Thursday, two of Zelensky’s advisers gave public statements implying the offensive hasn’t started yet, while a third insisted it was already underway along the 1,500-kilometer long frontline.

  • Nuland famously traveled to Kiev to support the Maidan protests in December 2013, handing out pastries to the crowds demanding a pact with the EU. In a February 2014 phone call, she discussed the composition of the future Ukrainian government with US ambassador to Kiev Geoffrey Pyatt, infamously declaring “f**k the EU”
  • Three weeks later, nationalists would violently seize power from President Viktor Yanukovich, triggering events that would lead to Crimea rejoining Russia and clashes in the Donbass.
Returning to the State Department in 2021 as part of Joe Biden’s administration, Nuland was once again put in charge of Ukraine policy.
  • Speaking at a Carnegie Foundation event in February, she said the conquest of Crimea and regime change in Moscow would be the ideal outcome of the current conflict.
  • Her husband is Robert Kagan, a co-founder of the neoconservative Project for an American Century and her sister-in-law, Kimberly Kagan, runs the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a Washington advocacy group frequently quoted by Western media about the situation on the Ukraine frontline."

Yatsenyuk: Ukraine's membership in NATO is only way to ensure Europe's security

The only way to ensure the security of the European continent is Ukraine's membership in NATO, Chairman of the Kyiv Security Forum Arseniy Yatsenyuk said.

"I support strategic certainty. It is absolutely clear that Ukraine must win this war. It is absolutely clear that Putin is a war criminal and must be brought to justice. It is absolutely clear that there is no other way to guarantee security for Ukrainian people and for the entire European continent, except for through Ukraine’s membership in NATO,” Yatsenyuk said during the 15th annual Kyiv Security Forum, founded by the Open Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk Foundation.

Yatsenyuk emphasized the importance of the unity of all NATO member states at the summit in Vilnius.

“There should be no more vague and strange memoranda or declarations, as was the case in Bucharest back in 2008. There must be certainty and clarity,” Yatsenyuk said.

According to him, it's time to make concrete decisions.

Yatsenyuk was Prime Minister of Ukraine in 2014-2016.

As reported, the NATO summit will be held in Vilnius (Lithuania) on July 11-12.

US Proxy War: The constant battle to keep things out of the memory hole Nuland-Pyatt Video Restored to YouTube

US proxy war

People have the right to be informed and in no way does the information within this article detract away from Ukraine’s right to defend itself from Russian aggression, nor does it undermine the people’s right to self-determination and protection from Ukraine’s military and government who have been waging a civil war for over eight years in the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk’s. A war zone the international community has constantly and conveniently ignored.

However, again we find the war of propaganda is constantly being waged. Censorship and the takedown of information on the internet seem to be the norm. The ‘memory hole’ is in full swing, it conveniently makes information that helps people get a better perspective of the history behind the Ukrainian conflict disappear.

A video of a leaked conversation between ‘Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland,’ a former U.S. ambassador to NATO and State Department spokeswoman, talking to the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, was removed from YouTube, but now has been restored.

Although during her three-decade-long career as a US Foreign Service officer Victoria Nuland has done many things, mostly in the shadows, unfortunately for her she was projected into the headlines, to become a household name in US foreign policy.

In the video, the two discuss changing the Ukrainian government weeks before the democratically-elected President Viktor Yanukovych was violently driven from power.

The video, posted on April 29, 2014, had 181,533 views before it was taken down on Wednesday, and was among the most viewed versions of the conversation on YouTube. Eight years’ worth of viewer comments on the video had also been removed.

The bugged phone conversation in which the pair disparages the EU over the Ukraine crisis was posted online. The conversation between Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and the US Ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, appeared on YouTube in 2014.

It came after Nuland arrived in Ukraine for talks in early February 2014, two weeks later a coup took place. It was also widely viewed on a Russian-language Web site, where it appeared online along with a photo montage of Nuland, Pyatt, and opposition figures. The Russian caption reads, “Puppets of the Maidan,” the colloquial name for Kiev’s Independence Square.

The background and implications of the 2014 far-right coup in Kiev, which overthrew the pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych, is critical for understanding the current Ukraine-Russia war. This coup was openly supported by the US and the European Union, implemented primarily by far-right shock troops such as the Right Sector and the neo-Nazi Svoboda Party.

It represented the temporary culmination of long-standing efforts by US imperialism to install a puppet regime on the borders of Russia and brought the world a major step closer to a war between the largest nuclear powers, the US and Russia. Ukraine has since been systematically built up as a launching pad for a NATO war against Russia.

Comedian Volodymyr Zelensky has secured an impressive victory against incumbent president Petro Poroshenko in Sunday’s run-off, the first official results confirm.
The 41-year-old showman secured over 73 percent of the vote, the Central Election Commission’s latest data shows, with 75 percent of the ballots counted. Poroshenko only managed to rake up a bit over 24 percent of support in the second round of the presidential race, as Ukrainians overwhelmingly turned away from his policies, which have perpetuated the war in Donbass and plunged millions into poverty.

HVALDIMIR: Norway warns civilians to stay away from Russian Spy Whale that has been approaching boats in the area

The friendly beast was dubbed Hvaldimir, a pun on the Norwegian for whale - hval - and Vladimir Putin in a reference to its possible Russian links

Norway warns civilians to stay away from Russian spy whale that has been approaching boats in the area

  • Whale named Hvaldimir has been travelling along Norway's coast for four years
  • He was found in 2019 with a harness on which GoPro cameras could be mounted

The Norwegian public have been warned to 'avoid contact' with a Beluga whale, which experts say could be a Russian 'spy', after it was found with a harness able to carry surveillance equipment.

The mammal has been 'travelling along the Norwegian coast' for around four years, but has now made its way into Inner Oslofjord, described as a 'densely populated area'.

The whale is known to follow boats and approach people, with its harness discovered by a fisherman and later removed in 2019.

Marine biologists have previously said it is 'undoubtable' that the whale is trained and highlighted that Russia had trained Belugas in the past to 'conduct military operations'.. .Hvaldimir is known to follow boats and play with those on board, but warned people to stay away, according to the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries.

In a statement yesterday, Director Frank Bakke-Jensen said people should keep their distance, 'even though the whale is tame and used to being around people.'

'We especially encourage people in boats to keep a good distance to avoid the whale being injured or, in the worst case, killed by boat traffic,' said Mr Bakke-Jensen.

Sadly, he explained, Hvaldimir has already 'suffered minor injuries, primarily from contact with boats.'

They added he 'tends to stay at farms where it has been able to catch fish, grazing on surplus feed.'

Oslofjord, a popular summer retreat for people living in Oslo, is just 100km away from Norway's capital and sees high boat activity.

Hvaldimir's migration to the area has sparked concern that he may need to be brought into captivity for his safety. . .The unassuming creature was first spotted in 2019 by fisherman Joar Hesten, off the coast of Finnmark, a county in northeastern Norway.

He managed to free the animal from its harness after it had been rubbing against boats in an apparent attempt to free itself, and contacted the country's Directorate of Fisheries.

Experts at the time told CNN that Hvaldimir was a trained animal, with evidence pointing to him having come from Russia.

Joergen Ree Wiig, a marine biologist at Norway's Directorate of Fisheries, said the harness he had been found wearing was 'specially made' with 'mounts for GoPro cameras on each side of it.'

In an apparent giveaway, the harness clips read 'Equipment St. Petersburg,' adding to a theory that he was trained by the Russian navy.

The navy has 'been known to train belugas to conduct military operations before,' Wiig said, with activities they are prepared for including 'guarding naval bases, helping divers, finding lost equipment.'

In 2017, the Murmansk Sea Biology Research Institute trained beluga whales, as well as dolphins and seals, for military roles in Russia's Northern Navy, the Siberian Times reported..."
