HOW-TO-HANDLE ANNOYING COOKIE CONSENT BANNERS

"The Brave browser will soon allows users to block annoying and potentially privacy-harming cookie consent banners on all websites they visit.

If you visited BleepingComputer from Europe, you may have noticed an annoying cookie consent prompt asking if you would like to accept data-collecting cookies from our advertisers.

These notifications are incredibly annoying but have become necessary to do business online to comply with data protection regulations like GDPR.

In some cases, however, these banners can serve as trackers themselves, as they engage in a privacy-breaching data exchange before the user even has a chance to opt out.

Secondly, it is widely accepted that the consent prompts severely disrupt the browsing experience, as users have to deal with them almost every time they visit a website.

Brave to block cookie consent notifications

Brave will now proactively detect and block the cookie consent banners to deal with both of these issues, removing both a distraction and a potential privacy risk for users.

“New versions of Brave will hide—and, where possible, completely block—cookie consent notifications,” mentions Brave’s blog post.

“Brave’s approach is distinct and more privacy-preserving than similar systems used in other browsers (such as the “auto-consent” systems used in other browsers), and helps keep the Web user-first.”

Unlike other solutions, such as browser extensions, that auto-consent for a user or block prompts, Brave says they break the communication channel between the browser and the consent-tracking system.

The roll-out of the new system has already started in Brave Nightly, and is scheduled to reach the stable branch on version 1.45 in October, starting with Windows and Android. iOS will follow soon afterward.

The new option will appear in the browser’s Settings, in “Shields,” where users may tick the box for blocking obtrusive cookie notices.

All users will get a prompt to set the new option upon launching Brave for the first time after the update that introduced the feature.

On a final note, Brave bashes Google’s push for technologies that remove control from users and give more experience-shaping power to websites, advertisers, data collectors, and consent-management systems.

“Cookie banners highlight how much worse the Web will get if Google (and others) succeed in weakening users’ ability to block such annoyances,” states Brave.

Examples of such technologies are Manifest V3, WebBundles, and Privacy Sandbox, which Brave sees as obstacles rather than allies in its fight to bolster user privacy and deliver a frictionless web browsing experience."

Pentagon reveals ‘full’ list of military aid to Ukraine

Officials also promised 18 more HIMARS systems, calling them a “core component of Ukraine’s fighting force

"The Pentagon has issued a list of American military aid approved for Ukraine so far this year, outlining nearly $17 billion in arms and gear, including tens of thousands of anti-tank systems, just shy of 1 million artillery rounds, and an array of heavy and long-range weapons platforms.

A “Fact Sheet on US Security Assistance to Ukraine” released by the Defense Department on Wednesday notes that Washington has authorized $16.9 billion in military aid for Kiev in 2022, the vast majority of which came after Moscow sent troops into the neighboring country in late February.

✓ The list includes more than 1,400 Stinger anti-aircraft systems, over 8,500 Javelin anti-tank weapons and 32,000 other anti-armor platforms, as well as some 988,000 Howitzer rounds, 60 million rounds of small-arms ammunition, and tens of thousands of mortars, rockets and grenades.

✓ The Pentagon has also sent large quantities of heavy weapons, among them over 150 artillery pieces, 20 Mi-17 helicopters, 200 M113 Armored Personnel Carriers, hundreds of Humvees, and 16 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) – one of the longest-range platforms provided by Washington to date.

✓ In addition to “non-lethal” gear such as helmets, body armor and mine-clearing equipment, the US supplied Ukraine with at least 700 Switchblade suicide drones and an undisclosed number of Claymore anti-personnel mines.

✓✓ In its latest $1.1 billion aid package for Kiev announced on Wednesday, the Defense Department vowed to more than double the number of HIMARS units operated by the Ukrainian military, seeking to send another 18 on top of the 16 already authorized. However, officials noted it could take “a few years” before the rocket systems are ready for the battlefield, as they will not be pulled from existing US stocks but rather contracted to American arms manufacturers.

A senior Pentagon official told reporters the HIMARS are intended to serve as a “core component of Ukraine’s fighting force in the future,” explaining that it is a “sizable investment” designed to prepare Kiev for the “long haul.”

The apparent shift to a longer-term approach comes as some military experts warn that Washington will not be able to keep up the pace of security assistance set over the last six months, with CNBC noting mounting problems in the American weapons supply chain in a report this week.

“There is a point where… the Ukrainians will need to be cautious about their rate of expenditure and where they prioritize those munitions, because there isn’t an infinite supply,” Jack Watling, an expert at the Royal United Services Institute in London, told the outlet.

While the US arms industry currently produces about 30,000 155mm howitzer rounds per year, the Ukrainian military is now burning through that number of shells in a period of just two weeks, CNBC added. Moreover, the better part of 9,000 Javelin launchers have been shipped to Ukraine, yet the usual annual output sits at just 800 units, suggesting the United States has drawn heavily on its stockpiles to keep Kiev flush with weapons."

NEW EU ANTI-RUSSIAN SANCTIONS

The eighth wave of anti-Russian sanctions, unveiled in Brussels on Wednesday, would also ban the import of several steel products and attempt to impose a price cap on Russian oil.

Shaving products, soap, floss and deodorant are also on the proposed import ban list

"Seeking to deprive Moscow of trade revenue over the conflict in Ukraine, the EU has proposed banning the import of Russian-made hygiene products, from soap and shaving needs to toilet paper and deodorant. The eighth wave of anti-Russian sanctions, unveiled in Brussels on Wednesday, would also ban the import of several steel products and attempt to impose a price cap on Russian oil.

“We do not accept the sham referenda and any kind of annexation in Ukraine, and we are determined to make the Kremlin pay for this further escalation,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced in Brussels. According to her, the proposed sanctions package is expected to deprive Russia of “an additional 7 billion euros ($6.7 billion) in revenues.”

The scheme requires EU residents to make do without Russian-made “beauty or make-up” products, shaving supplies, “personal deodorants,” dental floss, soap, and toilet paper, according to Politico.

Von der Leyen’s announcement comes just days after one of Germany’s pioneer toilet paper manufacturers, Hakle, filed for bankruptcy citing the skyrocketing prices of energy and source materials.

Hakle and other German companies had asked the federal government to cap the energy price as a way of staying solvent – but that was before a series of explosions on Monday damaged the two Nord Stream pipelines and cut off Germany from Russian natural gas, perhaps permanently. Meanwhile, government officials have been instructing Germans to shower less and use washcloths, to save on hot water.

Commenting on the proposed sanctions, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that between the sanitation products and water savings, “one involuntarily recalls the famous letter from 200 years ago,” in which the French Emperor Napoleon allegedly told his wife Josephine, “Do not wash.”

The EU also intends to sanction philosopher Aleksandr Dugin, whose daughter Darya was assassinated last month in a Moscow car bombing. Russia has identified two suspects in the terrorist attack, both Ukrainian nationals."

Marjorie Taylor Greene's husband files for divorce

Patrick Reilly

"Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s husband has filed for divorce from the conservative firebrand, she confirmed Wednesday.

“Marriage is a wonderful thing and I’m a firm believer in it,” Greene told The Post in a statement. “Our society is formed by a husband and wife creating a family to nurture and protect. Together, Perry and I formed our family and raised three great kids. He gave me the best job title you can ever earn: Mom.“I’ll always be grateful for how great of a dad he is to our children,” she added.

The Georgia House representative’s husband, Perry Greene, filed for divorce Tuesday after 27 years of marriage, according to court documents obtained by TMZ

The two were married in Aug. 1995 while Greene was still a student at the University of Georgia. They have three adult children together.

According to court documents, Perry Greene said the couple had split up before in the past. He wants to divvy up their assets and debts equally, the filing says.

Perry Greene said that his wife has been his “best friend” for the last 29 years, calling her “an amazing mom.”

“Our family is our most important thing we have done,” he said in a statement. “As we go on different paths we will continue to focus on our 3 incredible kids and their future endeavors and our friendship.”

Jeff Bezos' ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, divorcing husband Dan Jewett

"Second time was not the charm.

MacKenzie Scott filed for divorce from her second husband, Dan Jewett, on Monday after less than two years of marriage.

According to documents obtained by the New York Times, Jewett did not contest the divorce and the division of property has already been determined in a prenuptial agreement.

The former couple — who quietly got married in March 2021 — first hinted at marital problems when the science teacher’s name suddenly disappeared from Scott’s philanthropic pledges.

On the site for the Giving Pledge, where billionaires promise to give away half of their fortune before they die, his letter no longer appears with hers.

Her Amazon bio also completely erased any mention of her second husband.

Scott’s divorce comes three years after she and Jeff Bezos announced they were splitting following 25 years of marriage.

“We want to make people aware of a development in our lives,” Bezos, the world’s second richest person, tweeted at the time. “As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends.”

Bezos and Scott first met when they both worked for the hedge fund D.E. Shaw. They went on to have four children together.

Following their divorce, Scott became the 12th richest person in the world as Bezos’ assets were split in half."
