The Sun just released its largest eruption in days and a spacecraft got caught directly inside it.
A enormous cloud of plasma tore away from the Sun's surface and expanded outward into space at incredible speed. As it traveled, the expanding debris cloud briefly engulfed the STEREO-A spacecraft — a solar monitoring satellite positioned to observe exactly these kinds of events.
For a brief moment, STEREO-A was filming from inside the eruption itself. The footage captured is unlike anything seen in typical solar observation a raw, unfiltered view of a plasma cloud expanding from within. Right now, this particular eruption does not appear to be aimed at Earth.
But that's almost beside the point.
What's drawing attention is the bigger picture — solar activity has been steadily intensifying, and events like this are becoming harder to ignore.
The Sun is not calming down.
Do you think we're entering a new era of extreme solar activity?
