Sometimes the question is sincere. Sometimes it comes from people who do not follow policy closely. And sometimes it is less a request for information than a defense against information they do not want to believe.
People expect oppression to arrive as one unmistakable decree saying, “Women no longer have equal rights.” Modern authoritarianism rarely works that way. It works cumulatively — through withdrawn guidance, eliminated funding, weakened enforcement, restricted medical care, erased information, closed clinics, expanded religious exemptions and government definitions of whose bodily autonomy deserves protection.
No single one of those actions tells the entire story. Taken together, however, they reveal a consistent transfer of authority away from women and patients — and toward politicians, agencies, employers, religious institutions and the state. . .."
