The first Building Strong Neighborhoods Initiative of the 16/17 fiscal year will take place in a diverse area of properties and neighborhoods in City Council District 5.
The area includes large rural lots, single and multi-family homes, expansive retention basins, a golf course and proximity to Red Mountain Park.
The neighborhood boundaries are University Drive to Brown Road and Calle Largo to Hawes Road. The area includes the Gila Verde Mesa and Harvard Park neighborhoods.
The program will begin with an orientation or “kickoff” meeting Thursday, Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. at Red Mountain Multi-Generational Center, 7550 E. Adobe. District 5 Councilmember David Luna will provide the opening remarks.
“The Building Strong Neighborhoods event is one of my favorite things we do because it allows the City of Mesa to get face to face with our residents and really hear what their wants and needs are,” Councilmember Luna said. “Having an open line of communications between the City and our neighborhoods is so important and helps make Mesa such a great place to live.”
During the orientation meeting, residents will receive neighborhood survey results, meet neighbors, learn about helpful City services and will be encouraged to get more involved in the neighborhood. Residents attending the meeting will have the opportunity to meet staff from various City departments such as Code Compliance; Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities; Police and Environmental Management and Sustainability. Several nonprofit organizations will also have displays and information including United Food Bank and Arizona First Things First.
“We have received many survey responses from this area which shows that people care about their neighborhood and are willing to engage with the City to make it a great place to live. This program is really about education and collaboration,” Mesa Neighborhood Outreach Coordinator Lindsey Balinkie said. “I am looking forward to meeting more people in this neighborhood and working as a team to take a look at their concerns and ideas for the area.”
