The justice system is beginning to bring a measure of accountability for the events surrounding the unconstitutional conspiracy to overturn the 2020 presidential election—a welcome development for the rule of law.


Introduction and summary

More than 2 1/2 years since the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, the criminal justice system is starting to hold former President Donald Trump and his allies accountable for their wide-ranging plot to subvert the U.S. Constitution and overturn the 2020 presidential election. A Center for American Progress report published earlier this year considered what this accountability could look like, drawing on conclusions and recommendations from the final report of the bipartisan Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol. The committee issued its report after conducting a thorough investigation into the conspiracy that led to one of the darkest days in U.S. history
