In March, DSV acquired two Phoenix-area trucking and logistics companies -owned by the same family - to strengthen its local capabilities and support the airfreight service.
The Danish transport and logistics company said it reached an agreement to take over S&M Moving Systems West and Global Diversity Logistics (GDL).
- Both companies are located in the Phoenix area and have 130 total employees. They provide domestic trucking, air and ocean forwarding, warehousing, trade show logistics and special services for the semiconductor industry at 11 sites in California, Oregon and Arizona.
- S&M Moving Systems is an asset-based household goods and specialized transportation carrier that moves electronics, medical and manufacturing equipment, artwork and other commercial items.
- GDL is a non-asset based 3PL.
Kim Lofgreen, marketing and business development manager for the city Office of Economic Development, said there is currently no building in Mesa with a footprint that large.

PRIVATE-LABEL CARGO AIRLINE CARGOLUX / DSV Unveil Details for New Phoenix-Mesa Air Cargo Operation...world’s third-largest freight forwarder by revenue in February signed a 39-month lease
DSV has engaged Cargolux and Atlas Air to provide dedicated transport utilizing Boeing 747 cargo jets. Cargolux will begin weekly scheduled service from Luxembourg on June 5. Tentative plans call for Atlas Air to deliver cargo from Hong Kong and Taipei, Taiwan, to Phoenix-Mesa starting sometime in July, but final routing decisions are still being worked out, Mads Ravn, executive vice president and head of global airfreight procurement, told FreightWaves.
- Service to Phoenix-Mesa from Asia will actually piggyback on an existing operation provided by Atlas Air to DSV’s original U.S. hub at Huntsville International Airport in Alabama.
- Those flights continue to Miami and then to Sao Paulo. DSV intends to fly directly from Phoenix-Mesa to Latin America and offer export service back to Europe and Asia in the third quarter,..
DSV unveils details for new Phoenix-Mesa
air cargo operation
he world’s third-largest freight forwarder by revenue in February signed a 39-month lease with the Phoenix-Mesa airport authority for a 22,000-square-foot hangar that will function as a makeshift terminal for processing cargo moving on large freighter aircraft.

Those flights continue to Miami and then to Sao Paulo. DSV intends to fly directly from Phoenix-Mesa to Latin America and offer export service back to Europe and Asia in the third quarter, said Ravn.
Phoenix-Mesa “provides us with a serious competitive edge against our competitors … . Offering cargo aircraft capacity with the ability to exclusively manage the ground handling significantly strengthens growth opportunities — not only for DSV but for our customers as well,” said Niels Larsen, president DSV Air & Sea US, in an April news release.
Secondary airport for semiconductors
Good infrastructure, focused service, longer operating hours and fast clearance by customs authorities make it easier to pick up inbound shipments at smaller airports, according to air cargo experts.By leasing airside cargo terminals, logistics providers gain direct control over their freight compared to using multitenant facilities that disassemble and prepare loads for pickup at major gateways.Cargo bottlenecks are common at major passenger gateways, where many terminals are outdated, lack modern technology, and have limited truck access, dock doors and appointment systems. Freight retrieval is often slow as shorthanded ground handling agents have to locate and consolidate shipments for dozens of freight forwarders before they can be released.
The company claimed the hangar as a temporary solution for quickly targeting new business opportunities with semiconductor and electric car manufacturers, mining operations, and alternative energy companies until a permanent facility is built.

DSV Snaps up Arizona trucking, logistics companies...Transactions also fit with DSV’s (DXE: DSV) recent decision to lease a hangar at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport to support all-cargo private charter flights.

- The transactions, which are expected to be finalized in April, also fit with DSV’s (DXE: DSV) recent decision to lease a hangar at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport to support all-cargo charter flights.
“We have a strong presence in the U.S., and these acquisitions underline our continuous commitment to strengthening our U.S. position, competencies and service offerings,” said Niels Larsen, president DSV Air & Sea U.S., in a news release. “They also provide access to a strong heritage and a wealth of knowledge and experience in the semiconductor industry.”
Large outsourced logistics providers have identified the semiconductor industry as a large growth opportunity, especially as governments and manufacturers invest in massive fabrication facilities to keep up with demand and spread risk in a business where production is currently very concentrated.
Arizona’s emergence as a manufacturing hub for electric vehicles and batteries, as well as a growing market for EVs, also offers logistics opportunities for DSV.
DSV executives said having a freight forwarding base in Arizona gives the company another location for arranging freight moves between the U.S. and Latin America, supplementing a recent expansion of cross-border Mexico operations.
“With two official gateways into Latin America, we are better placed to support customer needs, particularly during busy periods and congestion,” said Robert Greene, executive vice president DSV Road U.S.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
DSV last year acquired Agility GIL, a major contract logistics company based in Kuwait, and the company remains on the lookout for mergers and acquisitions.
