Total reserves that include gold are made up of the following:

• Monetary gold holdings,
• Special drawing rights,
• IMF members' reserves held by the IMF, and
• Foreign exchange holdings under the control of monetary authorities.
  

Gold is kept as a reserve because it can act as a hedge against inflation. When currencies lose purchasing power, gold can retain or increase in value.
