Mike Huckabee: U.S. Ambassador No longer wholeheartedly endorses Palestinian state

Huckabee's comments were met with criticism, with some finding them offensive and dismissive of the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the aspirations of the Palestinian people for statehood.

The US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, said that there is 'no such thing as an occupation' when it comes to the Palestinian territories, and that 'if France is really so determined to see a Palestinian state [it can] carve out a piece of the French Riviera.

France is co-chairing with Saudi Arabia this month an international conference at the United Nations aimed at resurrecting the idea of a two-state solution, which the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposes. Paris has also said it could recognize a Palestinian state itself this year.

The phrase "carve out a piece of the French Riviera and create a Palestinian state" has been used in a controversial context by Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel
  • He used this phrase to criticize France's advocacy for the recognition of a Palestinian state, suggesting that if France is so determined to see a Palestinian state established, it should create one on its own territory.
  • He argued that France shouldn't pressure Israel to recognize a Palestinian state, especially during a time of conflict.
It's important to note that the idea of creating a Palestinian state on the French Riviera is not a serious political proposal but a rhetorical statement used to express opposition to France's position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Huckabee added that the United States no longer wholeheartedly endorses an independent state for Palestinians, saying he "does not think" the issue remains a US policy.

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee suggested that a Palestinian state could be formed in the territories of other Middle Eastern nations, since there is "no room" in the West Bank, he told Bloomberg in an interview published on Tuesday.

Huckabee added that the United States no longer wholeheartedly endorses an independent state for Palestinians, saying he "does not think" the issue remains a US policy.

Bloomberg quoted Huckabee as stating that "unless there are some significant things that happen that change the culture, there’s no room for it," in regard to establishing a Palestinian state in the West Bank.

Huckabee criticizes France's attempt to recognize a Palestinian state

Last week, Huckabee criticized France's decision to organize a UN conference that would see the recognition of a Palestinian state within a two-state solution, The Jerusalem Post previously reported.
"It's incredibly inappropriate in the midst of a war that Israel is dealing with to go out to present something that Israelis are steadfast against," he told Fox News in an interview.
"If France is really so determined to see a Palestinian state, I've got a suggestion for them: carve out a piece of the French Riviera and create a Palestinian state.
"They're welcome to do that, but they're not welcome to impose that kind of pressure on a sovereign nation. find it revolting that they think they have a right to do that sort of thing. I hope they reconsider. But, the United States will not be part of this."

US Ambassador to Israel expects no Palestinian state ‘in our lifetime’

Ambassador Mike Huckabee, a staunch Evangelical Christian and vocal supporter of Israeli settlement expansion, has said he doubts the creation of a Palestinian state remains a US foreign policy goal.

“I don’t think so,” he said when asked by Bloomberg News broadcaster if a Palestinian state is still a US goal.

“Unless there are some significant things that happen that change the culture, there’s no room for it,” he added, noting such changes probably won’t happen “in our lifetime”.

Huckabee has previously questioned the very notion of Palestinian identity, saying “really no such thing as a Palestinian”.
