Elon Musk Alleges EU of Offering X an Illegal Secret Deal After Being Ac...

Jul 15, 2024
The European Union has accused Elon Musk’s X.com previously known as Twitter of multiple violations of the Digital Services Act, including misleading users with its blue checkmarks for certified accounts.
However, Musk wrote a post on X stating,
“The European Commission offered X an illegal secret deal: if we quietly censored speech without telling anyone, they would not fine us. The other platforms accepted that deal. X did not.”

 AI OVERVIEW

The European Commission hasn't made "secret deals" with Telegram but has faced scrutiny and fines related to tech transparency, particularly with Elon Musk's X (fined €120M in Dec 2025 for DSA breaches) and allegations of secrecy around Ursula von der Leyen's texts with Pfizer's CEO (related to COVID vaccines).

While Telegram isn't directly named in these specific enforcement actions, the Commission's push for transparency under the Digital Services Act (DSA) impacts all major platforms, contrasting with past lack of transparency on text messages like those involving von der Leyen, which raised concerns about hidden decisions.

The European Commission offered 𝕏 an illegal secret deal: if we quietly censored speech without telling anyone, they would not fine us. The other platforms accepted that deal. 𝕏 did not.

In our view @X doesn’t comply with the DSA in key transparency areas. It misleads users, fails to provide adequate ad repository and blocks access to data for researchers. It’s the first time we issue preliminary findings under the Digital Services Act. πŸ‘‡ europa.eu/!CGPVCV
