Iran has released the official programme for the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with ceremonies
beginning on July 3 and concluding with his burial at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad on July 9.
According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei, representatives from more than 100 countries, including heads of state, foreign ministers and senior officials, are expected to attend.
Iran has announced an extensive state funeral programme for Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, with ceremonies scheduled to take place over nearly a week across the country's most important political and religious centres. The official itinerary, released by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei, outlines a series of public tributes, state ceremonies and funeral processions that will culminate with the late Supreme Leader's burial at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad.
The ceremonies are expected to draw one of the largest international gatherings hosted by Iran in recent years. Tehran says delegations from more than 100 countries, including heads of state, foreign ministers, special envoys and senior government representatives, are expected to participate. The funeral comes in the aftermath of Operation Epic Fury, the conflict that resulted in Khamenei's assassination and reshaped the region's security landscape.
Six-Day Funeral Programme Begins In Tehran
According to Baghaei, the tribute and farewell ceremony will begin at 8:00 am on Friday, July 3, with senior Iranian officials, foreign dignitaries and members of the public gathering to pay their respects. Additional international delegations are expected to join the ceremonies later the same day as official mourning continues.
Baghaei described the event as one that extends beyond Iran's borders. "The farewell and funeral ceremony for Martyr Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei is a historic and highly significant event not only for the Iranian nation, but also for the people of the region, Muslims, and all freedom-loving nations of the world," he said.
Commemorative ceremonies will continue on July 4 and July 5 at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla in Tehran, where thousands of mourners are expected to gather. The venue has traditionally hosted major national and religious events and is expected to remain the focal point of public mourning before the funeral procession begins.
Processions To End With Burial In Mashhad
The official funeral procession through Tehran is scheduled for Monday, July 6, before the cortege moves to Qom on Tuesday, July 7. Qom, regarded as the heart of Iran's Shia clerical establishment, holds immense religious significance and is expected to witness large public participation.
The final stage of the journey will take place on Thursday, July 9, when the funeral procession reaches Mashhad, Iran's holiest city and Khamenei's birthplace. Following the procession, the late Supreme Leader will be laid to rest at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (A.S.), one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in the Shia Muslim world.
Iranian officials have framed the funeral not only as a national farewell but also as an event carrying regional and international significance. With delegations expected from across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Latin America, the ceremonies are likely to become an important diplomatic gathering alongside their religious and symbolic role.
The week-long programme also reflects the central place Ayatollah Ali Khamenei occupied within Iran's political system, where he served as both the country's highest religious authority and commander-in-chief. As the Islamic Republic enters a new phase of leadership, the funeral is expected to project institutional continuity while offering allies and partners an opportunity to publicly express solidarity with Tehran.
