4 Downtown Places > Real Estate Walk-Arounds On/Off Main Street

Very happy to report that one of downtown Mesa's most unique properties has changed hands in a recent sale to new owners, The Beattys who have experience operating other food establishments, according to a brief conversation with two guys who were working on the place earlier today.
Plans are to re-open some time in February under then same business name "Inside The Bungalow".
The NWC of Robson/Main, with the 15-story high Courtyard Towers rising in the background, has been vacated by Floating Lotus Yoga Studio.
What's next at this point in time is unknown.
Brick House Vintage Marketplace is close by and with the fairly recent sale of the LeBaron Building and 212 and 214 W Main to a holding company that also owns The Sliver Lot across Main Street on the south side,
plans appear to be in development for "Burgers Amore" in the same block where Oro Microbrewery and Worth Take-Away Sandwich are located.
About a month ago LBH Custom Crafts LLC opened at the long-vacant 156 W Main Street, next to Jarrod's Coffee & Tea Gallery.
A saleswoman in the store didn't seem too enthusiastic to say much about the new business or why decided to open here in downtown Mesa except to state "They have a friend . . . "
The company's business cards states they have wood and canvas paintings, etched glass, decals, wine racks, custom gifts and more . . .

Have no idea why - and surprisingly so - Asylum Records @ 108 W Main, in what used-to-be the open courtyard space @ Chandler Court, looks empty with everything except for a few posters removed from the windows

Time To Celebrate End of The Calendar Year: Just Say "Shred It"

Two ways to get a perspective on this:
Is it document destruction or is it re-cycling?
That's the dumb question your MesaZona blogger found himself asking his bad self walking around downtown Mesa this morning.
The City of Mesa has been spending million$ on hardware and software for the IT Department, going "paperless" for years, but ya gotta wonder . . some folks will, some won't.
It wasn't an unfamiliar site to see parked behind City Hall another on-site document shredder truck, like this one this morning in the shadows behind the 8-story building that houses the offices and workplaces of our elected and employed civil servants inside city government.
To be honest it is not unusual to see trucks like this strategically stationed around city-owned places-of-work all year long in different locations hauling huge loads of paper documents into the heap bins on the backs and sides of the four-wheeled shredder service trucks.
But what to my wondering eyes should appear, but another truck on Pepper Place engaged in the same curbside on-site operations on the south side of Pepper Place right outside the doors of the headquarters for  Passey Investment Bonds.

The advertising on the side has the message
Lots left unsaid . . . but what you see is what you get

Here In Mesa Who's Thrilled About This??

Arizona Commerce Authority 14 hours ago
We're thrilled to announce the six Fall 2017 Arizona Innovation Challenge awardees! Congrats to GT Medical Technologies, @Life365inc, Paradox Olivia, Renewlogy, Resonea and SimpleWANinc!
Website for ACA Fall 2017 AZ Innovation Challenge Awards > http://www.azcommerce.com

Matt Likens,  a serial startup CEO
with a track record of impressive success.
Here in Mesa Matt Likens might be both thrilled and excited about GT Medical Technologies Inc. receiving the award for innovation from the Arizona Commerce Authority. . . and so might Bill Jabjiniak, Director for the city's Office of Economic Development
Matthew E Likens is not new to commerce - he's been 'an innovator' in medtech for a long time.
For good reasons a couple of years ago, the site selection to locate here in Mesa for Ulthera produced excellent results for the costs-of-doing business in a competitive industry.
President/CEO Matt Likens comes to  GT  previously leading Ulthera from pre-commercial with revenues of over $100M and a $600M exit. His prior experience includes five years as President of GMP Wireless Medical and a 23-year career at Baxter in units both in the U.S. and Europe.
Your MesaZona blogger had the pleasure to meet and talk with Matt Likens earlier in the year at one of the early-morning monthly meetings of the Economic Development Advisory Board when he noticed that yours truly frequently was one of few members of the public to attend these sessions about economic development here in Mesa.
On Thu 09 November 2017 Rosenman Institute Director Christine Winoto interviewed Matthew Likens, a serial startup CEO with a track record of impressive success.
Readers can track down the conversation by going to this link > http://rosenmaninstitute.org
How do you lead a startup from its founding to IPO or acquisition?
How do you keep investors on your side through the hard times?
Likens is currently President and CEO of GT Medical Technologies, the makers of GammaTiles, with the goal of improving the lives of brain tumor patients.
After graduating cum laude from Kent State University, Mr. Likens began his professional career with Johnson & Johnson Corporation. He then spent more than twenty years in domestic and international sales, marketing and general management roles at Baxter Healthcare Corporation, culminating in the position of President, Baxter Biotech North America, followed by President of Baxter’s Renal Division in the U.S.
In July of 2006, Mr. Likens became President and CEO and the second employee of Ulthera, Inc., a venture capital-backed start-up company in energy-based aesthetics in Phoenix, AZ.
After filing for an initial public offering in early 2014, Ulthera was acquired by Merz Pharma GmbH for $600M, an amount representing 6.6x trailing 12-months’ revenue.
> The Arizona Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) recognized this as Transaction of the Year for 2014.
> Phoenix Business Journal honored Mr. Likens in 2012, naming him one of Arizona’s Most Admired CEOs.
> In June of 2015, Ernst & Young presented Mr. Likens with the Entrepreneur of the Year for the Mountain Desert Region Award.
Mr. Likens is a member of the board of directors of Luma Therapeutics, an early-stage company with a promising treatment for psoriasis, and an adviser to Genteract, an early-stage genetics company.
He is a member of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council Healthcare Innovation committee and a member of the City of Mesa Economic Development Council.

GTMedTech https://www.gtmedtech.com/  has developed an innovative approach to the treatment of brain tumors by combining a conformable collagen matrix with brachytherapy (radiation) seeds.
The company's first product, GammaTile™, is protected by 10 issued US patents and has the promise to revolutionize treatment for 175,000 patients/year in the US alone.  At this time, the technology is only available for investigative uses and has not yet received FDA clearance.

Real-Time + Headline News: Another Tree Rises On Merry Main Street

Like some good things that arrive in boxes at this Holiday Time of the year, a new replacement for the tree taken down by arson arrived in the block on N MacDonald just north of Main Street to fill the empty space left in the hearts of those wishing to celebrate the third year of Merry Main Street around a Christmas tree.
It may be an artificial tree, all pre-wired with lots of branches to get fluffed and colorful balls to get hung-by-hand with care, but  with two hydraulic lifts, up it went 40 feet on a sunny day.
Your MesaZona blogger just happened to be walking west on Main Street to do some local shopping when what to his wondering eyes should appear but this  >
Almost looked like a real tree from a distance dropping into place like the ones yours truly used to see in New York City at Rockefeller Center on Fifth Avenue right after Thanksgiving. Shaking my head from visions of holidays past, this isn't Fifth Avenue by any stretch of the wildest imagination and it sure ain't Rockefeller Center . . . get real. So what's going on?
It's a short story that unfolded while sitting down on a bench inside a tent to chat with Sally Jo Harrison, the President of The Mesa Chamber of Commerce, just to the left of this beehive of chain-activity by lots of volunteers and city employees and equipment that put all this back together piece-by-piece to restore the Spirit of The Holidays that had gone missing in a sense-less act of arson.
More frequently than not, Ms. Harrison and your MesaZona blogger don't see eye-to-eye on quite a few things but this day was different under the circumstances when I spotted her in a tent in everyday attire part of a production line to put all the 100's of pieces together to erect a 40-foot tree on-the-spot and it was taking hours. The Mesa Chamber of Commerce had sent out an email earlier about plans to raise funds for the new tree; when asked if all the funds had been raised she simply and assertively stated "We will . . . "
(The image to the right is Sally Jo Harrison, cropped and enlarged from an wide angle zoom before we chatted)
Here's an image from the City of Mesa Newsroom that accompanied their press release - what the tree looked like on-site after all the physical human help and multiple hydraulic lifts. The City of Mesa announced on December 18th that through the continued, ongoing fundraising efforts of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, a new Merry Main Street Christmastree was installed yesterday to replace the tree destroyed by an arson fire last week. Donations for the replacement began coming in almost immediately as soon as the word got out about the arson fire and the giving page was set up on the Chamber's website.

Here's what it looks in all its glory at night adding to the attractions of the downtown streetscape >

"We received donations from all over the country including Washington, Utah, Virginia and many other states." Mesa Chamber President/CEO Sally Harrison said.
"We appreciate all the businesses that have stepped up to date as well as many of our community members to help replace the tree. We are still a few thousand dollars shy of our goal so we encourage those still interested to go to our website to give."
