Elon Musk Alleges EU of Offering X an Illegal Secret Deal After Being Ac...

Jul 15, 2024
The European Union has accused Elon Musk’s X.com previously known as Twitter of multiple violations of the Digital Services Act, including misleading users with its blue checkmarks for certified accounts.
However, Musk wrote a post on X stating,
“The European Commission offered X an illegal secret deal: if we quietly censored speech without telling anyone, they would not fine us. The other platforms accepted that deal. X did not.”

 AI OVERVIEW

The European Commission hasn't made "secret deals" with Telegram but has faced scrutiny and fines related to tech transparency, particularly with Elon Musk's X (fined €120M in Dec 2025 for DSA breaches) and allegations of secrecy around Ursula von der Leyen's texts with Pfizer's CEO (related to COVID vaccines).

While Telegram isn't directly named in these specific enforcement actions, the Commission's push for transparency under the Digital Services Act (DSA) impacts all major platforms, contrasting with past lack of transparency on text messages like those involving von der Leyen, which raised concerns about hidden decisions.

The European Commission offered 𝕏 an illegal secret deal: if we quietly censored speech without telling anyone, they would not fine us. The other platforms accepted that deal. 𝕏 did not.

In our view @X doesn’t comply with the DSA in key transparency areas. It misleads users, fails to provide adequate ad repository and blocks access to data for researchers. It’s the first time we issue preliminary findings under the Digital Services Act. 👇 europa.eu/!CGPVCV

Unstable minority governments in the EU stem from
political fragmentation, where no single party wins a majority, forcing fragile deals, like recent examples in France, Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal, leading to policy gridlock, frequent elections, and difficulty addressing major issues like the Ukraine war, weakening EU unity and global influence, with some external actors like the US Trump administration criticizing them as failing to deliver stability.
> While some minority governments can be stable with formal support, others without agreements (substantive minorities) face higher risks of collapse, a trend amplified by rising populism and internal divisions.

Key Examples of Instability
  • France: Recent snap elections resulted in a hung parliament, leading to fragile minority governments struggling to pass legislation amidst far-right gains.
  • Netherlands & Spain: Both countries have experienced instability, struggling to form lasting coalitions or minority governments.
  • Portugal: Faced multiple elections in a short period, highlighting deep political polarization between center-right, socialists, and the far-right.
  • Bulgaria: Severe political polarization between pro-Russia and pro-West factions led to repeated elections and near-constant instability.

Causes of Instability
  • Political Fragmentation: Voters are spreading votes across more parties, breaking down traditional blocks.
  • Rise of Populism/Far-Right: Parties like Marine Le Pen's National Rally in France gain traction by focusing on issues like immigration, challenging mainstream parties.
  • Internal Divisions: Deep ideological divides within countries (e.g., Poland's liberal government vs. conservative President) paralyze policymaking.

Consequences for the EU
  • Weakened Unity: Internal crises undermine strategic cohesion and the EU's ability to act as a unified bloc.
  • Policy Gridlock: Difficulty passing national legislation slows progress on EU-wide goals and impacts economic/social policy.
  • Eroding Global Influence: Unstable governments reduce Europe's credibility and capacity to project power globally.
  • External Criticism: Some (like the recent Trump administration) point to these governments as weak, hindering strategic goals like supporting Ukraine.

Types of Minority Governments
In essence, recent years show a trend where fragmented politics and deep societal divides make stable, effective minority governments a significant challenge across Europe, impacting both national governance and the EU's overall strength

SHAKEN TO ITS CORE: Europe's Reality Check & Power Problem | Kallas At Doha Forum

Europe's Reality Check & Power Problem | Kallas At Doha Forum

Kaja Kallas has addressed the new US National Security Strategy document while she was participating at the Doha Forum. She has stressed the importance of the transatlantic cooperation and said that the US still views Europe as a friend and ally.
She has also urged the European countries and the EU to be more “self-confident”.

The Telegraph has published an article about Kaja Kallas which questions her views.

Kaja Kallas’s hardline position isn’t helping Ukraine

Background:

  • On Thursday 4 December, the White House published a new US National Security Strategy, a key document outlining the foreign policy and security priorities of the United States.
  • The document stresses that policy towards Europe should focus on restoring strategic stability in relations with Russia, giving Europe greater responsibility for its own defence and preventing further NATO enlargement.
  • EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said that although the critical remarks from the US administration may have some basis, Europe must approach its own strength more confidently, particularly in its relations with Russia.
The article is asking if Kaja Kallas and the broader leadership of the EU is actually helping Ukraine’s position, given the fact that Russia seems to get stronger and stronger while Europe’s resources are drying out
