U.S. and Dutch officials participated in a signing ceremony Sept. 14 that included the Letter of Offer and Acceptance between the two governments to upgrade existing Apache Model D helicopters to the Model E configuration.

According to the DSCA press release, the government of the Netherlands requested the upgrade/remanufacture of 28 AH-64D Block II Apache attack helicopters to the AH-64E.
The upgrade includes a total package approach which includes training devices, helmets, simulators, generators, transportation, wheeled vehicles and organization equipment, spare and repair parts, support equipment, tools and test equipment, technical data and publications, personnel training and training equipment, U.S. government and contractor engineering, technical, and logistics support services, and other related elements of logistics and program support. The total package approach looks to ensuring the capability for the long-term.
The estimated total case value is more than $1 billion, but more importantly, this effort supports fortifying the Trans-Atlantic NATO alliance.
It is vital to U.S. national interests to assist the Netherlands to develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defense capability. Allies and partners are top priority for both the Department of Defense and Army, and this sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the U.S. by improving the security of a NATO ally which has been, and continues to be, an important force for political stability and economic progress in Europe
“Disassembly of the D-model aircraft will take place in Huntsville, Alabama,” Nichols said. “Dynamic components will be removed and shipped to their respective overhaul locations. All AH-64D/E common parts will be shipped to Mesa, Arizona. The actual upgrade itself will take place in Mesa.” The principal contractors are Boeing Company, Mesa, and Lockheed Martin, Orlando, Florida.

Good News: Free Open Public Debate For 4 Mesa City Council Candidates

Hear from 4 Mesa City Council candidates in a forum at Benedictine University on Thursday October 4, 2018 and learn | more about the four candidates in runoff races in District 3 and District 4 for the Mesa City Council. 

The Arizona Republic is partnering with Benedictine University and the Downtown Mesa Association to host the forum from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

 

Republic reporter Lily Altavena will moderate the forum, with questions from the audience and sponsoring partners.

Early voting begins October 10, 2018

Maracay pays $31.6M for 115 acres in East Valley

Maracay, a wholly owned company of the TRI Pointe Group (NYSE: TPH), has closed on the second of three parcels for a new 236-acre master-planned community that will span Gilbert and Chandler. 

Maracay has been assembling land for this community since it purchased 41 acres at the site in Gilbert earlier this year. Officials anticipate closing on another 80 acres in Chandler that connects to the Gilbert site to complete the trio of purchases. This week’s land closing of 115 acres for $31.6 million in Gilbert represents the next piece of land in the master-planned community assemblage . . .

Located at the northwest corner of Chandler Heights and Val Vista roads, the Gilbert portion of the site comprises a total of 332 pre-platted homesites acquired from four separate sellers. Ryan Willis of Willis Property Co. in Mesa brokered the four transactions amounting to $43.06 million. Half of the overall site was purchased from the Hamstra Family Living Trust in Chandler (Siebe Hamstra, trustee). The Hamstra family operated a dairy on a portion of the land on the west side of Val Vista Drive and north of Chandler Heights Road.

Maracay is scheduled to close on the third and final parcel of 80 acres and 240 homesites in Chandler in early 2019, bringing the total to 572 homesites. The large-scale master-planned community is expected to open in 2020. 

“We’re incredibly excited to continue to build in one of the fastest growing regions in the country, where jobs are thriving, schools are excelling and plenty of shopping and dining options are available,” said Andy Warren, president of Maracay.

Rarely Seen Signed Photographs by Pedro Guerrero

Taliesin West will host rarely seen signed original photography of Pedro Guerrero 

from Oct. 18 through Nov. 14.

Pedro E. Guerrero was one of the country’s most distinguished architectural photographers of his time, known best for his work with Wright, Alexander Calder and Louise Nevelson.

He was 22 in 1939 when he drove from his home in Mesa, Ariz. to a new  . . ..

The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation is unearthing a rarely seen original photography collection from one of the most well-known architectural photographers of all time, Pedro E. Guerrero, at Taliesin West from Oct. 18 through Nov. 14.

The collection is a work of 14 original, signed photographs taken by Guerrero at Taliesin West between 1940s and 1950s when he served as Wright’s official photographer. The prints will be on display in situ, meaning within the places they were taken, at Wright’s winter home in Scottsdale. Taliesin West is a National Historic Landmark nestled in the desert foothills of the McDowell Mountains and this year celebrates its 80th anniversary.

“I’m delighted that Pedro’s work will be shown at Taliesin West, the place he really became a photographer back in 1939 when Wright hired him on the spot to document the work there. He was fresh out of art school and had never seen anything like it. He said he approached it as if it were sculpture and that seemed to please Frank Lloyd Wright,” said Dixie Guerrero, Guerrero’s widow.

American Fitness Index Ranks Mesa One of The UNHealthiest Cities

Your health can be impacted by factors beyond your control— like the availability of parks, gyms, and farmers’ markets in your city. Each year the American College of Sports Medicine releases its American Fitness Index, which rank cities on dozens of factors, from how much park space is available to how often residents go to the gym. These scores offer a glimpse into the healthiest and unhealthiest cities in the U.S.

“The American Fitness Index provides cities with key information on residents’ behavior and health, as well as local infrastructure that is critical to a healthy, fit city,” Arizona State University professor Barbara Ainsworth, chair of the AFI board, told Newsweek. “Health is not just a matter of personal responsibility; the spaces where we live, work, and play have an impact on our health and our ability to lead physically active lifestyles.”

The ACSM worked with dozens of health experts to rank 100 U.S. cities on 31 unique metrics, using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Census Bureau, the Department of Agriculture and other agencies.



Each city was scored in three general areas:

• Overall health: The main score encompassing all indicators evaluated.
• Overall personal health: The score for main health factors like smoking, obesity, heart disease, exercise within the last month, aerobic activity and fruit and vegetable consumption.
• Overall community and environment: The score for outside personal health factors, like the walkability of a city and access to park space.

Even though some of the data is disheartening, it’s not all doom and gloom.
“This data can be used by these cities to expand local capacity and partnerships to implement policy and infrastructure changes that facilitate physically active lifestyles for their residents,” Dr. Craig Samitt of Anthem Health Insurance told Newsweek.
