While Futurama may be back for another season, the series' revival on Hulu posed plenty of unexpected challenges on the creative team.
Speaking to SFX, per The Direct, executive producer Claudia Katz explained how the general scale of the new episodes was a major hurdle that needed to be overcome.
  • "The challenges are episode-based.
  • There’s much bigger, more ambitious episodes in these new batches," Katz said.
  • "There’s not a lot of everybody sitting around the conference room table.
  • I’m hoping fans will be really, really pleased with that."

Katz went on to say that one of the major differences between the current and last seasons of Futurama is that the crew is working with updated technology, a factor that allowed them to bring new elements into the fold.
  • "We want to producer Futurama in a way where it looks great, or better than the last time you saw it, but we don't want it to feel unfamilair," the executive producer continued.
"We're producing this batch in 4K, which is a little different."

A Familiar Futurama

Despite these changes to the format, the Futurama revival has earned plenty of praise from fans and critics alike, many of whom have highlighted the series' refreshing yet familiar tone.
  • Voice actor John DiMaggio explained how the show is able to be both new and interesting while not alienating newcomers who may not be familair with the franchise's off-the-wall sense of humor.
  • "We've retained about 75% of the writing staff, consistently," DiMaggio said.
  • "And everybody that's new is seasoned as a motherf---er."

For a brief time, it was unknown whether DiMaggio would return to the series. Following the announcement that Hulu was footing the bill for another season of the show, the voice actor publically stated that he had no plans on reprising his role as Bender due to a dispute over his pay.
  • The actor insisted at the time that he believed her, as well as all the other returning voice actors, weren't getting a fair rate.
Despite his frustration, DiMaggio eventually opted to join the show once again although he ultimately didn't recieve the pay bump he campaigned for.
  •  "I didn’t want, nor did my agent want, me standing outside of a house that I should have been having Thanksgiving dinner in," DiMaggio said.
  • "It was just like, 'OK, I gotta say yes, because I don’t want the demise of the show on my shoulders.' They were ready to bring in other people. It was what it was."
