Notice:
The Maricopa County Air Quality Department has issued a No Burn Day for today, 7/28/2023. Full Details >
Forecast Discussion:
- In addition to ozone, we also saw significant dust move through the Valley yesterday evening as thunderstorm outflows pushed through.
- The blowing dust ended up causing two monitors in Maricopa County to exceed the PM10 federal health standard along with several others in Pinal County.
Looking ahead, there will continue to be chances for ozone to reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) category through tomorrow with generally calm daytime weather conditions.
As a result, we do have Ozone High Pollution Advisories in effect through Friday.
Over the weekend, we are forecasting early enough thunderstorms and cloud cover to limit the formation of ozone.
Therefore, we are forecasting ozone to drop into the Moderate AQI range.
As for particulates, the primary concern will continue to be dust from thunderstorm outflows. Today is expected to be quieter, and as a result, we are not forecasting any significant dust this evening.
However, after today there will be chances for dust from strong outflow winds each evening.
We are not forecasting PM10 levels to be as high as yesterday due to the rain stabilizing soils in some areas. Additionally, each day we get more thunderstorms in the area, soils should continue to get more stable. Overall, we are forecasting PM10 to stay in the Moderate category with a downward trend through the weekend as we get more rain in the area.
