Advanced Water Purification Program Update...Progress developing an Advanced Water Purification (AWP) Program (formerly referred to as Direct Potable Reuse).

Under the Environmental Quality Act of 1986, the Arizona State Legislature established the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality in 1987 as the state agency for protecting and enhancing public health and the environment of Arizona.

We are following up to provide you with an update about progress developing an Advanced Water Purification (AWP) Program (formerly referred to as Direct Potable Reuse).  ADEQ is continuing the process to establish rules, regulations and guidelines to implement an effective and sustainable program that meets the needs of our stakeholders and Arizona’s environment.  To gauge public perceptions about AWP and inform proposed rulemaking that brings clarity and understanding to constituents throughout the state, ADEQ commissioned stakeholder research and an accompanying survey. The information gained in this research will help us provide tools and resources for municipalities, water/wastewater industry professionals, local leaders and potential consumers for this viable water resource option. You may download and view a copy of the final research and survey reports here: AWP Research & Survey Reports.  Since our last communication to you in July, which shared the AWP Technical Advisory Group (TAG) recommendations, ADEQ has been using the TAG recommendations in conjunction with other sources to develop the AWP Program framework or “AWP Roadmap.” We are excited to share the roadmap with you soon, which will provide a detailed outline of the steps we will take to implement the AWP Program in Arizona.
