Amazon Web Services debuted a new office space in Haarlem, Netherlands in 2022, but there's one unusual thing about it, which has gained traction on social media this week: the office is inside a former prison.
Prison de Koepel, or "The Haarlem Dome Prison," opened in 1901 and closed in 2016. Following its closure, De Koepel was briefly used as a shelter space for Syrian migrants seeking asylum status.

Amazon uses space on the third floor of de Koepel, where prison cells have been converted into office spaces, and communal desks are available for individuals. On Thursday, an Amazon employee posted a tour of the space to TikTok on Thursday, and it was re-posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, on Friday.
The video shows a few former prison cells, with the AWS logo plastered just above the cell numbers. The TikTok user says that the cells, complete with office furniture and chairs, function as meeting rooms.

The use of a panopticon-style building is also notable, as Amazon has been criticized for perpetuating surveillance through its Ring home security cameras and its constant data collection on other products like Alexa. - Earlier this year, Amazon had to pay $30 million in two separate suits, in which the Federal Trade Commission charged the company with privacy violations. AWS opent mkb-cloudlab in Haarlemse koepel

Amazon Web Services (AWS) sluit zich aan bij een nieuwe techcampus in de voormalige koepelgevangenis van Haarlem. Op die plek met de naam CupolaXS start in januari 2022 op de derde etage een kennis- en innovatiecentrum voor het mkb. AWS krijgt er een eigen ruimte in een voormalige cel. Het is de eerste aanbieder van clouddiensten die zich bij het initiatief aansluit."Naast algemene sessies is er ruimte voor persoonlijk ondernemersadvies. Dat is een online vragenlijst die ondernemers en directeuren meer inzicht moet bieden in het niveau van digitalisering van hun bedrijf en wat er nodig is om de digitale transitie te versnellen. CopulaXS organiseert ook masterclasses voor managers op directieniveau (c-level). Daarin krijgen ze handvatten om beter leiding te geven aan de digitale transitie van hun organisatie.
Tot slot zijn er zeker vier keer per jaar sessies over onderwerpen die aansluiten bij de digitale transformatie van het mkb, zoals machine learning en data analytics. Naast algemene sessies is er dus ook ruimte voor persoonlijk advies aan ondernemers.

In 2016 verloor het in 1901 geopende gebouw zijn functie van gevangenis. Het gebouw bevatte vierhonderd cellen verdeeld over vier verdiepingen. Na de sluiting van de gevangenis is het gebouw aangekocht door de gemeente en verkocht aan Stichting Panopticon. Die heeft het gebouw en het omliggende terrein herontwikkeld.

Complex
The domed prison complex on Harmenjansweg in Haarlem is partly a listed national monument. It has a gross floor area of about 20,480m², and a total area of 1.70.66 hectares. The Haarlem Penitentiary Institute was built between 1899 and 1901 by the then architect of the Ministry of Justice, William C. Metzelaar, using the panopticon principle that had already been applied by his father Johan F. Metzelaar in Breda and Arnhem. In the 1980s and 1990s a sizeable extension was built in the courtyard of the domed prison building (approximately 8,000m² GLA). This accommodates workspaces and a library, among other things.
The complex is made up of three clusters: the Dome (approx. 8,000m² GLA), the ‘De Vest’ remand centre (approx. 4,000 m² GLA), and the new-build cluster (approx. 8,000 m² GLA). The domed main prison building is almost free-standing and forms the heart of the complex: all the other buildings are arranged around it.
Location
The complex is located on the edge of the city centre of Haarlem in the eastern part of the city in the Scheepmakerskwartier, and has excellent transport links. Haarlem railway station is less than a ten-minute walk away. Its strategic location relative to motorways and the city centre, together with its unique design, mean that the complex occupies a very special and distinctive position in the city of Haarlem.

The Koepelgevangenis in Haarlem is a former penal prison. The dome was designed and built by justice architect W.C. Metzelaar. His inspiration were the dome prisons in Breda and Arnhem, designed by his father Johan Frederik Metzelaar. Like the other cupola prisons, 'the Dome' in Haarlem is a national monument.
In early 2022, this monumental building reopened. The Koepel has been given an entirely new purpose; it is the new home for hundreds of students and teachers of the partnership 'Haarlems Instituut voor Hoger Onderwijs' for first HBO and later also WO-programs. The Dome also contains space for Flex Worker and Catering, making it a renovated building that is fully in tune with contemporary life. There is a Film Dome with six theaters, a knowledge and innovation center for SME Cupola XS, the Level One Game Museum and a mini museum about resistance fighter Hannie Schaft.
In terms of lighting, the additional windows that have been installed play a major role. 'During the day we have enough daylight. At night we use LED light,' says the project director. About 500 to 600 fixtures were installed for this purpose; they are all controlled by LTECH.
Flicker-free dimming was one of the main requirements for the Haarlem Dome's lighting concept. It had to become an integral part for the various public areas and for creating a friendly and convivial atmosphere. To meet these requirements, the light levels had to be adjustable. LTECH recommended choosing DALI as the control protocol because it is cost-effective, highly accurate and easy to manage and control.
With the LTECH DALI drivers, Koepel Haarlem was able to easily switch between different room purposes and provide a versatile and cohesive lighting plan.
