Raytheon Awarded $1.2Bn Contract to Provide Patriot Air and Missile Defense Systems to Germany

Germany buys €2.7bn Rheinmetall platform from Australian sites

Following cuts to armor in Australia's 2023 Defense Strategic Review, Rheinmetall use Australian sites in a €2.7bn German Army contract.

“This would be one of the largest Australian defense exports in the country’s history and supports Rheinmetall’s goal to further develop the capabilities of the Australian defense industry and integrate it into the company’s global supply chains,” said John Abunassar, head of Rheinmetall’s vehicle systems division.

Australia’s most recent Defense Strategic Review (DSR), published April 2023, recommended the reduction of the Land Combat vehicle System (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) acquisition from 450 to 129 vehicles, amid other striking reductions in Land 400 program procurement.
German-Australian cooperation on the program began in 2023, following visits between the two nations by government officials, with signed declarations laying the foundations for further contractual agreements.
The integration of Australian sites into the production of the Schwerer Waffenträger Infanterie would appear to accelerate delivery for the Bundeswehr while maximizing efficiency of Rheinmetall resources in the country following the setbacks in demand.

The German Bundeswehr has commissioned Rheinmetall to supply the "Schwerer Waffenträger Infanterie (Heavy Weapon Carrier for the Infantry)".
Following the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag approved the proposal on 20 March 2024, the contract was signed today on 21 March 2023.
  • The German Federal Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) will procure up to 123 vehicles “Schwerer Waffen-träger Infanterie”.
  • The contract is worth around €2.7 billion, which also includes service and maintenance.
  • Delivery is scheduled to begin in 2025.
The Heavy Weapon Carrier for the Infantry serves as a replacement for the Wiesel (“weasel”) tracked vehicle for direct tactical fire support of infantry units.
It is also a core element of the German Army's new force category, the "medium forces" are able to rapidly deploy over long distances and thus contribute to credible national and alliance defense.
The Heavy Weapon Carrier for the Infantry is based on the Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle (CRV), the wheeled armored reconnaissance vehicle of the Australian Defense Force, also supplied by Rheinmetall.
This is the proven 8x8 combat vehicle with an armored reconnaissance mission module including the two-person Lance turret. The main weapon is the Rheinmetall MK30-2 ABM automatic cannon, which is also installed in the German Puma infantry fighting vehicle.
  • In addition, the multi-role guided missile system (“mehrrollenfähiges leichtes Lenkflugkörpersystem” or MELLS), which enables the Heavy Weapon Carrier for the Infantry to provide anti-tank defense, is also fitted.

"With this expansion, Germany will not only modernize its own significant air defense but enhance its interoperability with allies and further strengthen a core NATO mission."

Patriot is the only combat-proven ground-based air and missile defense capability available in the world to defeat advanced long-range cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, and the full spectrum of air-breathing threats. Through investments by all Patriot partner nations, the technology is continuously refreshed, tested and upgraded.
