A strong magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurred in the Caribbean Sea near the coast of

Cuba in the morning of Sunday, Nov 10, 2024 at 10.50 am local time (America/Havana GMT -5).

The quake had a very shallow depth of 14.2 km (9 mi) and was felt over a large region.
The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.

No significant damage or impact is expected from this quake and no particular alert was issued.

Significant earthquake of magnitude 6.0 just reported 30 km south of Bartolomé Maso, Cuba

Cuba was shaken near Bartolomé Maso, Granma, by an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 only 7 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.

The quake hit at a shallow depth of 17 km beneath the epicenter near Bartolomé Maso, Granma, Cuba, in the morning on Sunday, November 10th, 2024, at 10:50 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface.

The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.0 as well.

Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.4, and
The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) at magnitude 5.6.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.

Moderate shaking probably occurred in Bartolomé Maso (pop. 53,000) located 30 km from the epicenter, and Yara (pop. 28,900) 42 km away.
In Campechuela (pop. 25,100) located 54 km from the epicenter, Manzanillo (pop. 128,200) 54 km away, Contramaestre (pop. 70,400) 82 km away, and Santiago de Cuba (pop. 555,900) 113 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
