Arizona Valley of The Sun begins New Year under High-Pollution Advisory

PM2.5 is fine particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter that result from fuel combustion from motor vehicles, power generation, and industrial facilities, as well as from residential fireplaces and wood stoves.
"High Pollution Advisory" or "HPA" means the highest concentration of pollution may exceed the federal health standard. Active children, adults, and people with lung disease such as asthma should reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion.

Doctors warn of worsening air quality in Phoenix this New Year

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — It’s no secret that the air quality across Phoenix has been bad over the last couple of weeks. Now doctors are warning it will likely get even worse with the New Year’s celebrations.

Phoenix usually sees its highest air pollution levels on New Year’s Day. That’s because of a combination of fireworks and people burning wood around the holiday.

You’ve likely noticed that brown haze sitting over the Valley for many days this month.

RELATEDLive air quality conditions in Phoenix and Central Arizona Earlier this year, a report from the American Lung Association showed Arizona has some of the worst air quality in the nation.

...PM-2.5 HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY FOR MARICOPA COUNTY INCLUDING THE PHOENIX METRO AREA TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY... ...PM-10 HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY FOR MARICOPA COUNTY INCLUDING THE PHOENIX METRO AREA WEDNESDAY... The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has issued a PM-2.5 High Pollution Advisory for the Phoenix Metro Area on Tuesday and Wednesday and has issued a PM-10 High Pollution Advisory for the Phoenix Metro Area on Wednesday. This means that ongoing stagnant weather conditions combined with existing airborne fine and coarse particulate levels may result in local particulate concentrations that pose a health risk. Adverse health effects increase as air quality deteriorates.
