Ukraine increased electricity imports by 5 times in 2024

In 2024, Ukraine increased electricity imports by 5.5 times – to 4.4 million MWh.

It is noted that the largest in the structure of electricity imports was 

1. Hungary – 39%, 
2. Slovakia – 23%, 
3. Romania – 18%, 
4. – 14% and 
5. Moldova – 5%.

The peak of imports last year fell on June, when more than 850 thousand were delivered in total. MWh. 

• The increase in supplies was due to the favorable price situation in neighboring electricity markets.

In December 2024, Ukraine increased electricity imports by 2.6 times, compared to November – to more than 430 thousand. MWh.

Hungary continues to have the largest share in the import structure – 35%. 

In second place Slovakia, with 25%. 

Imports from Hungary increased the most in a month, four times – to 152 thousand. MWh.

At the same time, last year's electricity exports remained almost at the level of 2023 – 366 thousand. MWh. The most electricity per year was supplied in March – 154 thousand. MWh.

Let's remind:

• If Slovakia will stop electricity supply to Ukraine, Poland can increase its imports due to the redistribution of capacity among other neighboring EU countries with Ukraine.
  
• Slovakia consider appropriate measures against Ukraine, such as the cessation of reserve electricity supplies after January 1, if Kyiv is expected to cease transit of Russian gas to Slovakia.

The Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico wrote a letter to the head of the European Council, Antoniu Koshti, and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Liaen, complaining again about Ukraine's refusal to continue the transit of Russian gas after 2024.
