Both military analysts and European governments acknowledge that the threat of Russian aggression is real, today even more so than three years ago.
Spurred by the war in Ukraine and the prospect of US
disengagement, European countries are debating a return to compulsory
military service to counter Russian expansionism. Lithuania, Sweden and
Latvia reintroduced conscription after Russia's seizure of Crimea and
the invasion of Ukraine – and some say the rest of Europe should follow
suit.
