In the 1960s, the U.S. Army introduced its first attack helicopter, the AH-1 Cobra, specifically designed for the jungles of Vietnam.
- While the Cobra proved effective, it also revealed many limitations.
- The single-engine design limited its payload and altitude capabilities, making it vulnerable if the engine malfunctioned.
- Moreover, the Cobra lacked long-range sight and weapons systems, forcing the crew to engage in risky close-range combat.
- During the Vietnam War, more than 5,000 helicopters were lost, an unacceptable loss rate.
