To see which states combine all the necessary components of happiness, check out WalletHub’s report on the Happiest States in America.
Based on data from WalletHub, Hawaii
is the happiest state in America for 2025, followed by Maryland and New
Jersey, with Utah and Delaware rounding out the top five.
“Research shows that having more
money only increases your happiness until you’re making at least $75,000
per year – anything more you earn likely won’t have an impact.
Therefore, when deciding where to live to maximize your happiness,
you’ll want to pick a city that offers more than just a decent average
income. The ideal city provides conditions that foster good mental and
physical health, like reasonable work hours, short commutes, good
weather, and caring neighbors.”

To calculate the happiest states and cities in the U.S., HouseFresh used Microsoft Azure’s Face API.
This facial recognition tool places numerical estimations on emotions
based on characteristics and expressions.
- They analyzed images from each state’s Instagram page, as well as from the top 100 U.S. cities by population.
- To work out the happiest cities and U.S. states, the team used the FaceAPI happiness score, averaging all the scores for the faces detected by FaceAPI in each location.
- For the smiliest American cities and states, they considered that a face has a smile if its smile score was more significant than 0.75.
- The locations were ranked by the
percentage of people smiling.
