The City of Mesa celebrates the grand opening of The Plaza at Mesa City Center with an 80's Party at the Plaza on Wednesday, September 28 at 6:30 p.m. The interactive family-friendly event looks to introduce the downtown community to the City's new major public civic space in downtown Mesa. With the highest resolution outdoor screen in Arizona - part of ASU's Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center - as a backdrop, this public park offers a unique community space that embodies the innovative spirit of downtown Mesa.
"This park will be a well-loved destination for community gatherings, movie nights and creative events with the ASU MIX Center," said Mayor John Giles. "As our downtown continues to evolve, it will be exciting to see the space activated and enjoyed by people of all ages."

Mesa's 80's Party at the Plaza will showcase roller derby demonstrations from Arizona Rollergirls. This free event will also feature a roller-skating rink for those who bring their skates, a live DJ and food trucks.
The new park is part of the Mesa City Center, a four-acre district with spaces for education, entertainment and community gathering. It includes an interactive water feature, an iconic shade canopy over an area for the Merry Main Street ice rink and other events. The newly built complex consists of The Plaza, the MIX Center and The Studios, an inclusive community space shared by the City of Mesa and ASU."

The Council approved an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with Arizona State University (ASU) for a new building project in February 2018.
It was a 'scaled-down version' of the $200M proposal for four buildings Mesa taxpayers rejected in 2016 when a $500,000+ privately-financed public relations campaign turned into a major screw-up.
Giles and his cohorts got what they wanted - now with a revised price-tag for $64M for just one new building, adding the renovation of the old IT Building to the sales-pitch.
That all turned into a major 360-Degree Dilemma for the selected constrained site on Pepper Place.
