John Kirby is a retired rear admiral in the United States Navy serving as Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council in the White House since late May 2022. He previously served as Pentagon Press Secretary for the first year and a half of the Biden Administration, and worked as a military and diplomatic analyst for CNN from 2017 to 2021.0 He was sworn in as Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs on January 20, 2021, where he advised Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks on public communications.2 Recently he joined Morning Joe to discuss rocket attacks on U.S military bases in Syria by Iran-backed groups as well as President Biden’s visit to Canada to address migration challenges, climate change and trade.
