Surge in Use of AI Leads to Creation of Supreme Court Steering Committee on Artificial Intelligence and the Courts 

PHOENIX – The Arizona Supreme Court has announced the formation of the Arizona Steering Committee on Artificial Intelligence and the Courts to be chaired by Chief Justice Robert M. Brutinel. 

The Steering Committee was created to assess the opportunities and challenges associated with artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on Arizona courts. This transformative technology has the potential to further improve the way courts process cases, streamline workflows, and analyze legal information. 

The Court will approach AI integration in an organized manner to account for ethical implications, proper handling of confidential information, understanding of possible biases, and the appropriate use of this emerging technology. 

Administrative Order 2024-33, issued on Jan. 24, 2024, outlines the purpose and priorities of the Steering Committee and its work, including: 

- Advise the Arizona Judicial Council on matters related to implementation, evaluation, and ethical use of AI technologies within the state’s judicial system. 

- Serve as a collaborative platform, bringing together experts in AI technologies, legal professionals, technologists, and stakeholders from within and outside the judiciary. 

- Recommend guidelines for identifying and implementing AI solutions to improve the efficiency of business processes, reduce case backlogs, enhance overall operational effectiveness, and improve access. 

- Develop and recommend guidelines and best practices to ensure the responsible use of AI in the judiciary, mitigating potential biases, and upholding the principles of fairness and justice. 

- Develop and recommend any necessary rules and procedures for use of AI technologies by judicial officers, legal practitioners, and judicial employees, and shall recommend specific products to be authorized as state-standard technologies for common work procedures in the judiciary. 

The Arizona Steering Committee on Artificial Intelligence will submit reports and recommendations on an as-needed basis.

There is public parking west of the court between Adams and Jefferson Streets. Visitor parking at the State Courts Building is limited to two (2) hours. All visitors must go through security first, located at the 2nd floor entrance to the State Courts Building facing the corner of Jefferson and 15th Avenue.

For any item listed on the agenda, the Committee may vote to go into Executive Session to discuss records or information exempt by law or court rule from public inspection or for advice of counsel.
