Earlier, the consulate, located next to the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus, was attacked by a missile at 12:17 p.m. that day. Iran claimed that Israel fired six missiles and launched a surprise attack on the consulate.
- According to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), up to eight people were killed, including Mohammad Reza Zahedi, commander of the elite Quds Force, General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, deputy commander, and General Hossein Aman Alahi, head of regional operations in Syria.
Israel has not made an official statement.
However, Major General Daniel Hagari, a senior spokesman for the Israeli military (IDF), told CNN that "the building that was attacked is neither a consulate nor an embassy," adding, "It is a military building of the Quds Force disguised as a civilian building in Damascus." "We are focused on the goal of war and we plan to continue to do everything that contributes to achieving that goal," he told reporters.
