As the international community holds its breath to see Israel's next step after an Iranian attack late Saturday involving hundreds of drones and missiles, an immediate response appears unlikely due to the "international pressure" on Israel, said Julien Barnes-Dacey, MENA Programme Director at the European Council on Foreign Relations. Unprecedented Iranian attack on Israel but weak drone showing/clear Iranian signalling to avoid wider war (ahead of & during attack) may strengthen Israeli belief that Tehran on back foot, lacking willpower/capacity for deeper conflict & now moment to inflict deeper blow on Iran

But just as Iranian effort to restore deterrence posture could do opposite, would likely be mistake for Israel to over-confidently now believe Iran won’t unleash a far more impactful response to strikes on Iranian territory which it will view in very different existential terms
