LM Boosts Domestic Microelectronics Capabilities for Pentago

OWEGO, N.Y. April8, 2024 – Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) will work with Intel Corporation (Nasdaq: INTC), and Altera, an Intel Company, to support the Stimulating Transition for Advanced Microelectronics Packaging (STAMP) program for the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OUSD R&E). Lockheed Martin will develop a low size, weight, and power (SWaP), Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA) aligned airborne electronic defense system, utilizing Altera’s Multi-Chip Package (MCP2) for expected use on the U.S. Navy’s MH-60R multi-mission helicopter. The project was awarded through the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane Division Strategic & Spectrum Missions Advanced Resilient Trusted Systems (S2MARTS) Other Transaction Agreement (OTA) vehicle and will be managed by the National Security Technology Accelerator (NSTXL). 

“We are excited to work with Intel, Altera, and OUSD to provide a revolutionary leap in defense systems capabilities, utilizing high-performance U.S.-built semiconductors,” said Deon Viergutz, vice president of spectrum convergence at Lockheed Martin. “In the modern battlespace, against modern threats, this technology will be essential to the evolution of legacy systems and development of new systems that keep service members safe by controlling the electromagnetic spectrum and staying ahead of the threat.” 

The Multi-Chip Package (MCP2) based on Altera’s Agilex9 SoC FPGA Direct RF-Series is the latest example of how we’re delivering industry-leading products via our chiplet technology,” said John Sotir, Senior DirectorMilitary Aerospace and Government Business and State-of-the-Art Heterogeneous Integration Packaging (SHIP), Altera. Through STAMP and our collaboration with Lockheed Martin we’ve enabled the rapid development of vital defense systems to provide higher bandwidth and performance at low latency, lower power, and in a smaller footprint.”  

As a STAMP awardee, Lockheed Martin will advance the progression of technology to enable a defense system that detects and identifies threats with greater speed and accuracy at a significantly reduced SWaP and cost, freeing space for equipment to support other missions. While initially designed for the Sikorsky MH-60R helicopter, STAMP technology applies to platforms across all domains, including air, land, and sea. Altera’s Agilex 9 SoC FPGA Direct RF-Series enables the defense system by providing advanced digital and analog capabilities while reducing the systems size, weight, power, and cost by an order of magnitude. 

Over the next 18 months, Lockheed Martin will integrate its latest SOSA technology with Altera’s semiconductors with the intent to ultimately implement, test and complete production through the U.S. Navy’s MH-60R helicopter program.  

For STAMP, work will be performed at Lockheed Martin’s facility in Owego, New York.

Rheinmetall to Deliver 20 More Marders to Ukraine

The German government comissioned Rheinmetall to deliver 20 additional Marder infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) to the Ukraine. The order was placed in March 2024 and has a value in the mid double-digit million Euro range. The delivery of this new lot is scheduled within 2024. So far, Rheinmetall has already handed over a three-digit number of Marder IFVs to the Ukrainian Armed Forces via direct deliveries and circular exchange programmes.

The version of the 1A3 Marder that has now been ordered also features integrated laser range finders, which enable efficient and precise target elimination. The company had already supplied the first 20 of these combat vehicles to the Ukraine on behalf of the German government in March 2023. A number of further lots have since been delivered, each in two-figure numbers.

Rheinmetall acquired the overhauled 1A3 Marder IFV from the Bundeswehr. The company began overhauling the IFVs for immediate deployment at its own expense back in spring 2022. The corresponding work has since been underway at Rheinmetall's locations in Unterluess and Kassel.

The Marder IFV, which was developed for the Bundeswehr, and is still being operated there, is one of the world's most proven weapon systems of its kind. Over the course of its service life, the vehicle has been repeatedly modernised and improved in its combat effectiveness.

The Bundeswehr now has more than 300 Puma IFVs in operation, representing the latest generation of this type of combat vehicle, and gradually eliminating the Marder IFV in the German Army. In addition, a second lot of over 50 additional Pumas was ordered in 2023.

BlueHalo to Provide US Army with Full-Cycle Support for HEL Systems

The Palletized High Energy Laser (P-HEL) system, developed by BlueHalo in support of the U.S. Army Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO), has a proven track record of successfully engaging and eliminating small unmanned aerial system (sUAS) threats to forces and critical infrastructure–a rapidly growing concern to U.S. battlefield dominance. BlueHalo was awarded a four-year logistics support contract to provide preventative and corrective maintenance along with operator and maintenance team training for BlueHalo’s P-HEL system. This newly awarded contract establishes BlueHalo as the full-cycle lead system integrator from prototype development to frontline operations for the P-HEL system.

“With this contract, BlueHalo is now providing full-scale Directed Energy support to our customers–at home through advanced innovation, in the field through maintenance and training support, and strategically through operational guidance and battlespace management,” said Jonathan Moneymaker, BlueHalo Chief Executive Officer. “Our industry-leading Directed Energy expertise and intimate knowledge of the P-HEL system, combined with lessons learned from deployment, will truly transform how our Warfighters use laser weapon systems to combat evolving enemy sUAS threats.”

In April 2022, BlueHalo delivered its first mature prototype of the P-HEL system. The U.S. Army RCCTO deployed the unit overseas, where it commenced operational employment in November 2022. Earlier this year, BlueHalo’s second P-HEL was delivered and deployed overseas. Both P-HEL systems have undergone preventative and corrective maintenance in the field, to maintain operational tempo and continue operator system training.

GDMS to Provide LCS Support Services

General Dynamics Mission Systems announced today that it was awarded a cost-plus-fixed-fee and firm-fixed-price contract by the U.S. Navy worth $33.7 million to be the design agent and provide lifecycle sustainment services to support the Independence-variant Littoral Class Ship (LCS) Combat System. This contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $92.6 million.

“General Dynamics Mission Systems has been the Independence-variant combat systems provider since the beginning of the program,” said Scott Beauchemin, vice president of surface systems at General Dynamics Mission Systems. “We look forward to continuing to provide the U.S. Navy with upgrades to the Independence-variant LCS combat system so it remains ready to meet the needs of our sailors’ missions today and in the future.”

Work will be performed in Pittsfield, Mass.; San Diego; and Mobile, Ala. and is expected to be completed by March 2025.

General Dynamics Mission Systems will provide the overall in-service engineering and lifecycle support for the command, control, communications, computers, combat systems, and intelligence (C5I) systems by delivering critical engineering, software development, testing and system upgrade/replacement planning onboard LCS hulls and at shore-based facilities.
