Putin stressed Russia’s strategic partnership with China ahead of the upcoming BRICS summit held in Kazan. Russia is seeking to discuss digital currencies to reduce US dollar dependency and to stay immune from Western sanctions. Discussing Russia’s cooperation with China, Putin stressed the importance of their partnership, particularly in energy. Putin spoke to heads of press as Zelensky was touring Brussels, pitching his “Victory Plan” with NATO membership as the priority. NATO’s Rutte has said Ukraine’s path to membership is “irreversible,” but has been noncommittal about when exactly that will be and that, of course, angered Putin. Putin further said Ukraine should lift its ban on talks with Russia. The head of Russia clarified he’s never wanted a “truce”, which would only giving the NATO countries time to re-arm and accumulate more ammunition. “We must resolve the issue of safeguarding of Russia's long term interests in the security sphere”, said Putin. Turning to broader geopolitical issues, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s support for a two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Putin indicated that he might not attend the G20 summit in Brazil in person but would send a high-ranking Russian official instead. The Summit will be attended by China and other 18 member countries, plus the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU) on 18–19 November 2024. __________________
