Tesla Cybertruck: Outselling All Other EVs apart from the company's own Model 3 and Model Y

The Tesla Cybertruck, a vehicle often described as that from the future, has become the third best-selling electric vehicle in the US in the latest quarter, outselling all other EVs apart from the company’s own Model 3 and Model Y.

Data from Cox Automotive says the Cybertruck sold 16,692 units over the 3 months, which was over twice as much as the Ford F150 lightning, its most obvious competitor. It also overtook the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
  • That’s a pretty amazing feat, given the Cybertruck still boasts a price of around $US100,000, making it one of the more expensive EVs on the market.
Indeed, adding up the sales up for other popular electric trucks such as Ford F-150 Lightning (7,162), Hummer EV (4,305), Rivian R1T (3,817) and GMC Sierra EV (387), it appears that the Cybertruck outsold their combined totals.
“Cybertruck is just such an awesome product,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk boasted on X.

During the same period, Tesla sold 86,801 Model Y, which led the overall sales charts. This was followed by the Model 3 with 58,423 sales.

The three Tesla vehicles on the Q3 EV sales podium made up over 161,000 sales and the overall EV sales helped get the US EV uptake over the last three months to 8.9% of all new car sales.

For comparison, Australian EV uptake over the same period has averaged 6.3%, which is down from highs in Q2 of 2024 in our market.

The Cybertruck has achieved a significant amount of interest and sales when many in the automotive industry didn’t think it would even ever make it to the road.

So much so that in recent times, the Tesla Cybertruck has even been acquired by police fleets, celebrities, sports stars and many others looking at a very different truck to drive.

This year, Tesla has also been using the Cybertruck to draw crowds into stores and build interest in the brand globally.

Back in April, Tesla’s Cybertruck also made it to Australian shores and started a roadshow that began in Sydney.

Nearly 6 months later, the Cybertruck has now been along parts of the East Coast, Tasmania, and Western Australia, and it has just landed in South Australia.

With so much interest in a car that many said would not sell in volumes, Tesla’s designers have once again proved that the market doesn’t always know what they want until the product becomes available.

Tesla is expected to soon start deliveries of lower cost variants of the Cybertruck. Exports into Canada and Mexico have also begun with rumours of it also heading to international markets in some parts of Asia.
