The New Trailer for Pixar’s Elio Dials Up the Nostalgic Vibes
Pixar’s next film is called Elio, and we’ve been hearing about it for so long, you may have assumed it already came out. Well, it hasn’t, and a new trailer was just released timed to this month’s big family films and the vibe has definitely changed.
First announced at D23 Expo back in 2022, Elio follows a young boy who wants to be abducted by aliens. However, when his dreams come true, the aliens mistake him for the leader of the planet and now this young child has to save everyone in the world. It’s a fun concept that leaves room for a ton of weird, wacky alien stuff which was the focus of the first trailer that came out over a year ago. In this new trailer though, things focus more on the Earth side, turning up the nostalgia.
Actor Yonas Kibreab voices Elio, and he’s joined by Zoe Saldaña as Aunt Olga, Remy Edgerly as Glordon, Brad Garrett as Lord Grigon, Jameela Jamil as Ambassador Questa and Shirley Henderson as OOOOO. Great names by the way. It has three directors – a sure sign of the film’s struggles – and they are Madeline Sharafian (Burrow), Domee Shi (Bao, Turning Red) and Adrian Molina (Coco).
Originally scheduled for release in March 2024, Elio is now coming on June 13, 2025. That’s par for the course on some Pixar movies and, hopefully, the extra year and a half means that Elio has evolved into the awesome movie it could potentially be. Pixar raised the bar again with Inside Out 2 this year and with a lot of sequels coming from them over the next few years (Toy Story 5, Incredibles 3, etc.) we’d love to see a new star emerge from the animation giant.
And while this trailer certainly has some of those wild, colorful aliens, the Earth stuff hits differently. You get big-time 1980s vibes from seeing a child going up to space, unsure what they’re going to encounter. It reminds me of Explorers, The Last Starfighter, E.T., that kind of stuff.
Elio hits theaters on June 13. Let us know what you think of the new trailer below
