TESLA > Arizona Administrative Judge Intervenes to Bust-Up Car Dealer Monopoly

Tesla , Inc. (TSLA) Scores Small Win in Arizona
over Direct Sales Model

[The car company has got the license by the DMV last year]
Why is Arizona changing its mind? Tesla selected Reno NV for its gigafactory battery factory – bringing thousands of jobs to the state. Tesla is not going to build it in a state where it’s illegal for the company to sell its cars.
Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) has been in trouble recently over its direct sales business model which is not allowed in a lot of states.
Here's what reporter Laurie Roberts had to say in an opinion piece a few days ago
Roberts: Tesla gets green light to sell cars in Arizona (no thanks to Gov. Doug Ducey)

Tesla lovers rejoice.
You now can go to the car manufacturer’s Scottsdale showroom and the Tesla sales staff can tell you how much the cars cost.
They can even sell you one and before they do, you can take a test drive -- all things that were strictly forbidden in Arizona until now.
So who do we have to thank for this innovative breakthrough, allowing a business to actually sell its wares in its store?
Here’s a hint:
Not Gov. Doug Ducey.
And not the Arizona Legislature.
Innovation is great, just not here
Oh, they’re all for innovation. (See: Uber.) Just not when it cuts into the take for major Republican Party contributors
I’m guessing that might have something to do with the fact that car dealers are a major financial force in the state Republican Party.
Tucson car dealer Jim Click is among the state's largest individual contributors to political campaigns. He and his wife gave more than $370,000 to the Republican Party and its candidates in 2014, including nearly $150,000 to get Ducey elected.
That we know of, that is. Ducey enjoyed millions in "dark money" support in 2014 and of course, we aren't allowed to know who those donors were.

The Arizona Capitol Times’ Jeremy Duda is reporting that ADOT was forced to give Tesla a dealer’s license last year after an administrative law judge in July ruled that Tesla can sell its cars directly to consumers.
Judge Jerald Hale ruled that Tesla can’t be denied a license because it has no network of dealers and thus the prohibition against competing with its dealers doesn’t apply.
The Arizona Automobile Dealers Association sued ADOT but a Superior Court judge dismissed the case. Neither the dealers nor ADOT appealed. Probably because the administrative law judge was right.
The automaker has been suffering from weak sales in such states as people have to buy their cars from different states and also don’t get the option to have the luxury of using the service centers of the company for the maintenance of their vehicles.
However, the carmaker had a small victory against people opposing the direct sales model in Arizona.
According to Electrek, Tesla managed to secure a dealer license which the company had got after DMW issued it last year.
The car company has been fighting out the direct sales bill in Arizona, and multiple attempts to make changes to the bill have been unsuccessful for Tesla which made it difficult for its Arizona customers.
According to the report, “Thanks to a dealer license granted last year by the Arizona Department of Transportation, Tesla is now availing itself of opportunities that had long been denied it.
ADOT granted the license Tesla sought after an administrative law judge determined that a law that was widely believed to prohibit it from selling directly to customers didn’t apply to the company.”
The automaker currently is operating two service center and its gallery near Phoenix which it can now serve as full stores after getting the license. Tesla had taken a similar route in Utah as well where the company failed to change the laws regarding the direct sales bill. Hence it went to court to prove that such laws should not apply to it as it does not have any dealership franchise in the state.

Ripe For Disruption > The Trucking Industry

Here's how Tesla, Uber, and Google are trying to revolutionize the trucking industry
Danielle Muoio, Published 9:07 am, Tuesday, June 20, 2017
Silicon Valley has its sights set on the trucking industry, and for good reason.
Every time we receive a package of randomly assorted Amazon items, it was likely delivered on the back of a massive big-rig driven by one of 1.7 million truck drivers in the US. It's important, and grueling, work that was thrown into national focus for a brief moment when President Donald Trump climbed into an 18-wheeler in March.
But the job, the most common one in 29 states, is also ripe for disruption.
Medium- and heavy-duty trucks generate 23% of the US transportation sector's overall greenhouse gas emissions, and long hours combined with paltry wages lead to an extremely high turnover rate of 81%.
So when tech behemoths discuss electrifying or automating the trucking industry, it's easy to see why there's room for change.

"Self-driving technology can transport people and things much more safely than we do today and reduce the thousands of trucking-related deaths each year," a Waymo spokesperson told Wired.
In 2015, 4,067 people were killed and 116,000 people were injured in crashes involving large trucks, according to the latest figures provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Wikileaks Snags Fly Trap + Cherry Blossom

Announcement from WikiLeaks
Cherry Blossom
15 June, 2017
Today, June 15th 2017, WikiLeaks publishes documents from the CherryBlossom project of the CIA that was developed and implemented with the help of the US nonprofit Stanford Research Institute (SRI International).

CherryBlossom provides a means of monitoring the Internet activity of and performing software exploits on Targets of interest.
In particular, CherryBlossom is focused on compromising wireless networking devices, such as wireless routers and access points (APs), to achieve these goals.
Such Wi-Fi devices are commonly used as part of the Internet infrastructure in private homes, public spaces (bars, hotels or airports), small and medium sized companies as well as enterprise offices.
Therefore these devices are the ideal spot for "Man-In-The-Middle" attacks, as they can easily monitor, control and manipulate the Internet traffic of connected users. By altering the data stream between the user and Internet services, the infected device can inject malicious content into the stream to exploit vulnerabilities in applications or the operating system on the computer of the targeted user.
The wireless device itself is compromized by implanting a customized CherryBlossom firmware on it; some devices allow upgrading their firmware over a wireless link, so no physical access to the device is necessary for a successful infection. Once the new firmware on the device is flashed, the router or access point will become a so-called FlyTrap. A FlyTrap will beacon over the Internet to a Command & Control server referred to as the CherryTree. The beaconed information contains device status and security information that the CherryTree logs to a database.
In response to this information, the CherryTree sends a Mission with operator-defined tasking. An operator can use CherryWeb, a browser-based user interface to view Flytrap status and security info, plan Mission tasking, view Mission-related data, and perform system administration tasks.
Missions may include tasking on Targets to monitor, actions/exploits to perform on a Target, and instructions on when and how to send the next beacon. Tasks for a Flytrap include (among others) the scan for email addresses, chat usernames, MAC addresses and VoIP numbers in passing network traffic to trigger additional actions, the copying of the full network traffic of a Target, the redirection of a Target’s browser (e.g., to Windex for browser exploitation) or the proxying of a Target’s network connections. FlyTrap can also setup VPN tunnels to a CherryBlossom-owned VPN server to give an operator access to clients on the Flytrap’s WLAN/LAN for further exploitation. When the Flytrap detects a Target, it will send an Alert to the CherryTree and commence any actions/exploits against the Target. The CherryTree logs Alerts to a database, and, potentially distributes Alert information to interested parties (via Catapult).

“It should be noted, however, that the CBlossom architecture does not limit itself to wireless devices – in general, wired network devices could be implanted/compromised in the same fashion to achieve the same goals,” read the alleged CIA document.

WikiLeaks latest Vault 7 dump includes CherryBlossom router hacking tool
Home routers are particularly vulnerable because most are bought, installed and then never looked at again by the owner, Chris Hinkley, Armor's lead ethical hacker told SC Media.
"Most routers and WiFi access points are neglected so much by users that they are rarely ever patched and updated. In a large number of cases, the default login credentials are never changed. These facts alone make these devices quite vulnerable to attack," he said.
The malicious firmware update creates the following set up on the router. The router becomes a FlyTrap, capable of handling a variety of malicious tasks. The FlyTrap will beacon to a its command and control server, dubbed CherryTree. The hacker will then use a browser based administration panel called CherryWeb to control monitor CherryTree's status and send along missions to perform.
Some of these missions could include, WikiLeaks wrote, “scan for email addresses, chat usernames, MAC addresses and VoIP numbers in passing network traffic to trigger additional actions, the copying of the full network traffic of a Target, the redirection of a Target's browser (e.g., to Windex for browser exploitation) or the proxying of a Target's network connections.”
In addition, FlyTrap can setup VPN tunnels to a CherryBlossom-owned VPN server to give an operator access to clients on the Flytrap's WLAN/LAN for further exploitation."
While Wikileaks did not leak the tools the CIA allegedly uses, the current state of router handling across the board allows the CIA and other malicious actors to potentially infiltrate networks in a way that is not much thought about," Hinkley said.

Rolling Stone Reporter Matt Taibbi Uses Alex Jones For A Punching Bag

Caught in Matt Taibbi's most up-to-date crosshairs, he spares no punches to a media mongrel. The occasion:
Megyn Kelly Vivisects Bloated Conspiracy Hog Alex Jones
One of America's greatest goofs ODs on his own self-importance on national TV
First, your MesaZona really admires hard-hitting media reporters like Jonathan Pie and Matt Taibbi - they have a strong with words. Matt's father Mark Taibbi was a local reporter for years in New York City with a more under-stated presentation but with the same instinctive gut to tackle the news. Matt, really out-there with a brilliant mind and way-with words has gone against the establishment breaking first into a packed line-up of reporters who barely scratch the surface - Matt gets under people's skins. Read him yourself this time around in Rolling Stone ...this is just to get you started off with opening lines:
By
"Last year around election time, I sent a clip of Infowars lunatic Alex Jones to a friend. It was one of the ultimate Jones set pieces: his classic "gay bomb" rant, where the balloon-faced TV host turns baboon-ass red working himself up into a rage about Pentagon-designed hormonal weaponry that supposedly can "turn the frickin' frogs gay!"
What do you think tap water is?" he croaks, in the broadcast. "It's a gay bomb, baby!"
My friend wrote back. "Who the hell is that?" he said.
Why, I responded, that's Alex Jones, one of the most influential people in the United States.
My friend didn't believe it. "Come on, this is a gag or something," he said. His actual quote was that the Jones show was like a Nazi version of Tommy Boy, which to him was too funny of an idea to have been generated unironically.
This isn't an uncommon reaction. Most sane people can't process Jones. Nor can they deal with the fact that he drew 83 million page views during election month last November, or that Infowars had 5.3 million unique visitors in May of last year . . "
. . . This is a crazy conception of how media is supposed to work. Judging a report by how tightly it keeps control over whatever you think the desired message is supposed to be is pretty much the opposite of what we're taught to do as journalists. We're describers, not politicians, and the best way to convey the essence of Jones is to let him betray it himself. . . "
He's an epic dingbat, but one of tremendous power and influence. People need to understand how acts like his work and why. No effort to consign him to the margins is going to be successful, because he's already burst way beyond those parameters.
