Tentative Agenda for Mesa City Council Meeting Mon 07 May 2018

Here's what's been published so far when these items were uploaded from the city's official calendar today.
As usual there's a huge number of items up to get approved by actions to be taken by the Mesa City Council - some of them get more attention than others.
First of all, let's extract those items about proposed tax increases and increases in certain fees and charges ITEM 7
PLEASE NOTE THERE ARE 53 ITEMS tentatively scheduled for this City Council Meeting on Monday - that's five calendar days ahead so you, dear readers, do have the time to find out what issues are up for consideration - Pay Attention.
There are matters that can impact you in a number of ways in the districts where you live and city-wide. Just one item is getting a lot of attention from mainstream media over talk about a hike in sales taxes, that the City Council says is not in any way related to another bogus scheme to somehow finance a presence of ASU downtown in new construction proposals. It's a mixed bag of accounting tricks buried in memoranda, inter-governmental agreements, and the usual cast of characters of city officials and certain developers who are hedging their bets pending convincing taxpayers to foot-the-bill - as well as hikes called 'modifications' in consumption fees/taxes and charges for any utility you use.

rates/fees/charges Do you think any of these will get reduced?
10 items that deal with modifications and/or proposed terms Items 7-a > 7-j
  • electric utility services in D1 + D4
  • natural gas utility service Citywide
  • water utility services Citywide
  • wastewater utility services
  • solid waste utility services

How language shapes the way we think | Lera Boroditsky

Published on May 2, 2018
There are about 7,000 languages spoken around the world -- and they all have different sounds, vocabularies and structures. But do they shape the way we think? Cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky shares examples of language -- from an Aboriginal community in Australia that uses cardinal directions instead of left and right to the multiple words for blue in Russian -- that suggest the answer is a resounding yes. "The beauty of linguistic diversity is that it reveals to us just how ingenious and how flexible the human mind is," Boroditsky says. "Human minds have invented not one cognitive universe, but 7,000."
